April 2012 Game at Templer Park

Scribe Report

Templer Park

April 2012

The third Wednesday of April was a fine bright day as 15 Kloggers were expected to make their way to Templar Park. The club had prepared a nourishing light lunch which was enjoyed by members as they trickled in. Unfortunately John A, after initially requesting to play in the last flight, had to cancel and Rick B hadn’t appeared when the Tannoy sounded for Kloggers to proceed to the tee. So 13 gathered at the buggy station to form 4 flights. The arrangement had been to use one tee box if there were less than 5 flights but confusion reigned with the first flight being dispatched to the 1st and the rest to the 10th. Eventually all flights went off from the 10th albeit in a different order to that planned but with the 4 ball bringing up the rear.

The Colonel appeared at the 12th tee box to join the first flight, having traveled via Tropicana GCC which his navigational machinery had thought to be his intended destination. And hence we had 2x 3 ball flights sandwiched by 4 balls – not the best set up for a smooth progression. All went well until the siren sounded at 1600 when all golfers returned to the clubhouse much to the joy of the caddies who were terrified by the distant lightening and approaching storm.

The last flight had just arrived at the 1st tee having completed the back 9 when the siren sounded whilst the other flights were on the 2nd, 3rd and 4thholes respectively. Sometime after the siren, torrential rain arrived with much thunder and lightning. As 1700 approached it was clear that the final flight would not be able to complete their round – no floodlights at this otherwise splendid course – and El Pres decided to make it a 9 hole competition and bring supper forward to 1800. For the record the All Clear was sounded at 1725 when a few intrepid golfers returned to the course which was still waterlogged in parts. Needless to say this didn’t include any Kloggers, many of whom had already decided to shower and attack the beer.

The 9 remaining for supper were joined by very welcome Travelling Member, Wayne Beck, who found himself in KL on transit to Thailand and other Asian countries before possibly joining the Tourists for the last 2 days in Angeles.

COTD was not hotly contested owing to the tradition that only Kloggers present could be awarded this prestigious trophy. Had be ther, Rick Brown would have won the award hands down for “getting lost on his way to the course he has played many times before, for being as blind as a bat and dumb as dog shit” The last despite the Scribe being absent on urgent business. Also for claims to having been commissioned into the British Army but getting lost – then leaving early. Funnell was nominated for watching and listening to the flutter of leaves without actually seeing his ball create the flutter.

However the winner on a unanimous show of hands except for his own was Mike Smith for his 60 with just 8 points – the highest number of strokes he can ever remember playing for 9 holes of golf.

The scores, for the record, for the 9 holes on the back nine were:

And the results as follows:

  • Winner with 19 pts     Andrew Robinson with guest Geoff McLaws having accumulated 20 pts
  • First Runner Up with 17 pts   John Preston
  • Second Runner Up with 16 pts  Andrew Barber
  • NTP Back Nine Andrew Robinson
  • Last Birdie  Geoff McLaws
  • Most Golf  Mike Smith with 60.

Unfortunately the curtailed game meant that these were the only awards, however our grateful thanks as always go to our sponsors, Alistair Guthrie and The Old Clubhouse which has now moved to Bangsar Shopping Centre in conjunction with City Golf who also sponsor us. Robert Frager and Renaissance Hotels. And Richard Rodwell for fine wines Direct

There are now 13 intrepid Kloggers with 2 guests making a party of 15 for the away in Angeles City this month and with Air Asia having just brought forward their flight by 60 minutes it will be an early start. Could lead to some interesting scores for the May monthly Medal!
