December 2016 Game – Sungai Long Golf & Country Club

img_1480

We had our December game at Sungai Long Golf & Country Club which is always a great venue. The course was in great shape and the weather looked great at the start but we had about 3 showers of rain during the round which fortunately didn’t impede play. The greens were running fast at about 11.5 which caused some consternation with many of the players and resulting in quite a few 3 putts.

Post game dinner and prize giving was held at Restoran East of Highway which was excellent with some great dishes ordered by El Pres. We were joined at dinner by John Arkinstall who didn’t play today but joined us for the dinner.

Results

The monthly medal winner for December was Fran Hierz, with a score of 98 for 38 points (cut 4). Runner up was Ricardo Castro with a gross of 92 for 36 points (cut 2) with 3rd place being Roger Surieux with 101 for 35 points (cut 1).

The NTP winners were as follows:

Hole 3 : Iain Wise 8.70m

Hole 8 : Stuart Taylor 2.02m

Hole 14 : Stan Constantinides 8.46m

Hole 17 : Franz Hierz 10.29m

It must be mentioned that all players measured their NTP’s in metres except the flight with Andrew Robinson, Roger Surieux, Pietro Martucci and Franz Hierz who decided to measure in ft and ins requiring a rather tedious conversion to match in with the other measurements.

Last birdie was Bernie Schobert on Hole No 12 and the best gross was Geoff McLaws with an 84.

COTD

We had 6 nominations this month for COTD.

  1. Stan Constantinides and Ricardo Castro for predicting a 1% chance of rain for the game …. we had 3 fairly decent rain showers during the game.
  2. Pietro Martucci for trying to measure his drive nearest to the line when we never have a nearest the line competition.
  3. Mike Smith for taking multiple chips onto the green on the 8th hole then realising he was playing the wrong ball as handed to him by his caddie then stomping off the green in a foul mood and launching his putter into the bunker ….. AND then after retrieving his putter NOT raking the bunker.
  4. Franz Hierz for being on the green in 2 on Hole No 9 and then scoring a 7.
  5. Bernie Schobert for playing off a handicap of 19 when his actual playing handicap was 12.
  6. Iain Wise for not changing into his golf shoes until the last minute.

Mike Smith was unanimously voted as COTD.

Here is the evidence of the putter marks and footprints in the bunker on the 8th hole. Extensive ballistics measurements identified the putter mark as consistent with this that would be made by Mike Smith’s putter and forensics on the footprints match up with Mr Smith’s golf shoes …. case closed!

We should mention that as Richard Rodwell who normally supplies the wine was not at this game and so Ricardo Castro kindly supplied some excellent wine for the consumption of the members after the game. Many thanks Ricardo.
