PTGC can now be reached in relative safety since the previously suicidal U-turn has been relocated further up the road. This course has always been in the shadow of the big brother Templer Park next door. Nevertheless it’s a fun course with very challenging holes. Hole 7 comes to mind where the average hacker has the options of driving straight into OB, hooking into the water on the left, shanking into OB on the right or taking a chicken shot to safety. The back nine is a jungle course with narrow fairways and lots of opportunity to screw up. The front nine is more benign except for that hole No. 7. The fairways and bunkers were in good condition. Most of us found the greens very slow.

19 KLOGS members and guests teed off on time with a two tee box start. A thunderstorm threatened to cut short the afternoon’s proceedings. However apart from a few drops of rain we had a more or less enjoyable round of golf. The club mangement took the usual last minute changes in their stride and did a good job.

Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 9.28.44 PMThe pictures above show El Pres, as host to our guest Mr. Tan, as well as a demonstration of a good smack down the middle with a perfect finish. However Alistair’s 73 must have been a treat to watch.

I had the pleasure of witnessing Geoff Mclaws’ 78. A true golf lesson indeed. Apart from one or two wayward shots the slow greens kept him from also approaching par. The Leader board:

  • 3rd with a gross of 97 and 34 points (OCB) John Arkinstall
  • 2nd with a gross of 73!!!! And 39 points Al Guthrie
  • 1st with a gross of 78 and 40 points Geoff Maclaws

  • NTP back nine: Al Guthrie
  • Last birdie: Klaus Kretzschmar

COTD Nominations:

  • Tony Morris: Confused a blue pail as a tee box marker and promptly hit a scorcher from outside the tee box for a 2-shot penalty.
  • El Pres: For giving John Preston a fit due to the uncertainty of playing at all or arriving late (he did neither). There was also mention of phone calls between EL Pres and John during which El Pres used rather colourful language. (Glenn Wombwell’s decision to play and withdrawal a few hours later seems to have been the topic).
  • Bernhard Rohman: For Caddy abuse. He blamed the caddy for losing his 58º which was found later.
  • Tony Morris: He caught up to the flight in front and asked them if they had found a club he had lost. Upon reflection he asked them to forget the question. (This was my personal favourite).
  • Andrew Robinson: Multiple misdemeanours, which for the sake of brevity are combined here (a) forgot to bring along the prize vouchers again, (b) forgot to bring the bottle of wine for the prize giving, (c) after promoting the culinary delights of a nearby Chinese restaurant he was unable to contact the said establishment for final arrangements only to find the place closed down for renovations. Luckily for him he did not lead the convoy there. We had a passable dinner at the club instead.

No vote was necessary and Andrew took the COTD honour hands down. Since Andrew has sworn off beer for several years now opting instead for wine, John Preston downed the beer and then wanted to claim the sleeve of balls. I believe he gave one ball to Andrew.

El Pres gave Al Guthrie the opportunity to explain an upcoming competition during July / August which will allow multiple games at Templer Park for RM 50. The terms and conditions were so complicated that EL Pres will circulate a flyer to the members for personal deciphering.

Ray Funnel invited members to participate in a charity golf event which will be held at KGSAAS on 7th May. Many enticing prizes in total worth RM 35,000 are up for grabs including trips to Sri Lanka and Nepal. For those not being able to attend three prizes can be won by purchasing raffle tickets. Contact Ray Funnel for more details.

El Pres welcomed the guests and thanked our sponsors Old Club House, Wines Direct and City Golf as well as Robert Frager for the KLOGS balls.

El Pres confirmed that 17 members have signed up for the May Away. Another 3 would be ideal. So please get cracking. The on-ground cost is RM 2,500. Details of payment to Simon of Liberty Travel will be announced shortly. The tour details were included in the March report. Rick Brown, who is kindly organising the tour shirts, urgently needs the sizes from each participant.

After sharing a buggy with Jimmy Legget he now wants to share a room with me during the May Away. To that I can only say….. three’s a crowd.
