January Game at Saujana & AGM

Monthly Stableford : January 18th 2006

Saujana Golf & Country Club

29 golfers took on the challenge of The Cobra (Palm Course) – surely one of the best and most challenging courses that KLOGS have the pleasure of playing. A number of previous guests became signed up members of KLOGS. We welcome Fritz Katzengruber, Ray Funnell and Gerhard Dvorcek. Fritz is also a rules expert, plying his trade on the Asian professional circuit. We also had two past members returning from the USA, Tim Littlefield and Joe Zorich who were here preparing for the Malaysian Ryder Cup later in the week. The international presence was completed with a much welcomed visit by Tim Riddle.

As the results show, this was a tough course with gross scores ranging from 79 all the way through to 115. The average gross was 99.6 and average Stableford score was 29. The weather was kind and the arrangements were seamless. Thank you, David Sebastian and Thank you, SGCC – also for the Saujana golf towels given to each player.

The results were as follows :

First place – John McGillivray, 92 gross for 36 points. Handicap to be cut by the mandatory 4 strokes.

Second was Martin Walsh, 35 points from a 19 handicap which now moves to 17, and,

Third was Al Guthrie with the low gross of the day of 79 for 34 points off a 5 handicap that now moves to 4.

Best Gross (79): Alistair Guthrie

NTP (1st 9): Des Hassan

NTP (2nd 9): Tim Littlefield

Longest Drive: Bernie Schobert

Last Birdie: Simon Price

CoTD: Klaus Kretzschmar – for a variety of offences which

included taking a massive divot without moving the ball

Following the presentations, the AGM followed.

The Annual General Meeting

In the absence of both the 2005 President and Vice President the responsibility of presenting the President’s annual report fell to Committee Member Peter Jackson, the highlights of which were a review of the statistics of the year.

Apologies for absence from Richard Moss and Mike Huggins were noted.

The courses played in 2005 were read out and it was noted that RSGC produced the lowest average gross score of 96.3 followed by Kajang Hill at 97.0.

On behalf of all KLOGS members, PJ thanked the monthly sponsorship from both Alistair Guthrie (OCH) and Mike Smith (Flagz). David Sebastian’s efforts in securing all the venues and arranging the two away trips was also acknowledged with thanks.

The notable 2005 performances mentioned were:

  • May Away (Hua Hin) winner: Mike Smith
  • November Away (Phuket) winner: Craig McEntyre
  • Most games (13): Rikki Ingham, Peter Jackson & Moneybags Kula
  • Most CoTDs (3 – all in the first half of the year): Mike Smith
  • Most shots: Peter Jackson with 1,435
  • Best gross score (73 at Bukit Tinggi): Simon Price

It was also mentioned that there had been no eagles scored all year!

Finally, there was a minute’s toasting for Erol Akinci who has recently had major heart surgery. A speedy recovery is hoped and expected and for a player well rested, re-bored, re-valved and re-tubed, a six stroke handicap cut was proposed!! (and discounted)

Treasurer’s Report

Chris Kula presented the accounts for the year and a copy is available to all members on request.

Going into the January event the kitty had a surplus of RM 2,720

  • CoTY – Awarded to Martin Walsh being the first KLOGS trophy Martin has ever won (this in itself is probably ample justification for someone who has been around for so long!) for introducing a leprechaun suit at the November Away and for wearing the suit in a reputable establishment on Patong Beach.

Election of 2006 committee.

President : John McGillivray

Vice President: Peter Jackson

Incoming President’s Address

The 2005 committee were thanked, in particular “Vice” for the outstanding job he did in standing in for departed President. Thanks Rikki.

Members were urged to make 2006 a particularly successful year through getting attendances up at the monthly games.

Sponsorships.

  1. Shirts. It was proposed that a new official KLOGS shirt is needed and Interdean International Movers (John Preston) and ds Travel (David Sebastian) generously pledged RM 2,500 each for the shirts which will be sold to members to raise funds for the kitty. Thank you John and David.
  2. Balls. John Walker very generously agreed to sponsor the balls for 2006 and agreed to discuss with Alistair Guthrie for the selection of a high quality ball for the year. Thank you John.
  3. Old Clubhouse. Once again Alistair continues to support KLOGS with the donation of a fairway wood (or equivalent) for the monthly winner. Thank you Alistair.
  4. Flagz. Mike Smith’s donation of a dinner for two of RM 150 is also much appreciated. Thank you Mike.

Membership.

El Pres suggested that the criteria for membership needs to be reviewed and said that the KLOGS Co. would look into this and report back to members.

Late arrivals and “no-shows”. The penalties passed at the 2005 AGM are to remain in force and to be implemented: Rm100 for a late arrival and Rm 200 for a no-show.

Away Trips. The usual May and November trips are planned and venues will be considered by the KLOGS Co and proposed to members.

AOB

Handicap adjustments. Des Hassan proposed that single figure handicappers should never have more than a 4 stroke cut for winning the monthly stableford. This proposal will be looked into by the KLOGS Co.

Martin Walsh questioned if the KLOGS handicaps would roll over from one year to the next or be re-set at the beginning of each year. It was agreed to roll them over.

There being no more business the AGM was closed by El Pres, beer mugs were emptied as were several of the bottles of wine awarded.
