January 2020 Game – Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia

The first game of 2020 was held at Kelab Rahman Putra, a very picturesque but challenging venue. With one late drop-out, 27 players including Honorary KLOGGERS Ian “Crackers” Craighead & Mike Smith & guests teed-off on the Lakes Course at ~1pm.

The course was in good shape and the weather was good for the whole of the round.

All players then adjourned for a good four course dinner at the clubhouse where they were joined by Andrew Robinson, Barry Cousins & your scribe. Excellent service was provided by Laily & her staff of KPRM; needless to say numerous jugs were consumed, plus some good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prizes ). joined for dinner. Thanks to Tony for his generous 70th Birthday donation of Rm300.

Results
Seven players bettered or equaled their handicaps, but 12 players recorded less than 30 points reflecting the difficulties of this course if you are not a big hitter.

The January medal winner was Stuart Taylor, with an excellent score of 85 for 48 (cut 12 ! – what a great handicapping system !). Second was Robert Frager with 81 for 46 (cut 2), with an Eagle on the Par 4 13th hole; 3rd was Edwin Ferner (93 for 40)(cut 1).

COTD

We had 6 nominations this month for COTD :

2. Tom – since Edwin did not drive to the club !
3. Bernd – for an “incident” in the locker room relating to his lost key
4. Mike Smith – for wandering around in towel, asking for directions to the showers
5. Bernie– for nearly wiping out a caddy on 1st tee-box, then still parring the hole.
6. Geoff – for hitting 245m then trying to measure from the 200m line rather than the 250m, and then failing to par the hole

Geoff was unanimously voted as COTD

AGM
The AGM was also held after the game, introduced by El Pres, Iain Wise, who thanked Paul Geddes (VP), Roger McGowan (Moneybags), Dave Evans (Scribe) & Frank MacKenzie (Fines Master) for their support. EL PRES thanked Renaissance Hotels though Robert Frager for sponsorship of new golf balls which should see us through 2020.

EL PRES reported :

KLOGS has now completed its 30th year.

We played 7 different local courses during the year – visiting Templer Park, Kota Permai & Sungai Long twice. It was good to celebrate Xmas at the Chalet Suisse Restaurant after the December game; thanks to Hans and Bernie for making this available.

The May Away was to Thailand, for which we had 18 tourists. It was good to catch up with the Overseas groupies, in particular Brian Jeffers, Wayne Beck & Frank MacKenzie who are regular May Away tourists along with “Hasty” Hewitt.

In November, we returned to Chiang Mai with 20 players attending; after 20 years of Klogging, we finally managed to get Robert Frager on tour !.

Throughout the year 62 active members played 248 rounds. In addition, 18 guests played 27 rounds, so in total 89 players played 275 rounds. We welcomed 13 new members.

The number of local players for the 2 Aways increased which is good to see as we were starting to become very dependent on the overseas members

In Memoriam
Sadly at the end of April we lost one of our members – Ray Funnell. Ray had been a KLOGS stalwart for nearly 20 years. He served on the committee as Vice President in 2007 and is sadly missed. We had a moment of reflection for Ray and other absent Kloggers.

Finances
Iain briefly presented the finances; we have a healthy balance. There were no questions / comments.

January 2019 Game – Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia

img_4105

The first game of 2019 was held at Kelab Rahman Putra, a very picturesque but challenging venue.   With one late drop-out due to illness, 27 players including guest Nicky Lambsdorf teed-off on the Lakes Course at ~1pm.

The course was in good shape and the weather was good for the whole of the round though play was somewhat slow because of another big group who went out just before so the first flights finished ~ 6pm.

All players then adjourned for a good four course dinner at the clubhouse accompanied by numerous jugs, plus some good wines provided by Richard Rodwell & Ricardo Castro  (our sponsors for the wine prizes ).  Ian “Crackers” Craighead, Richard Moss, Barry Cousins & your scribe (who was the subject of many a butt joke !) joined for dinner.

Results

Only two players bettered or equaled their handicaps, with 14 players recording less than 30 points.

The January medal winner, returning in fine form after a few months absence, was Rafael Matos, with an excellent score of 92 for 44 (cut 8).  Second was Stuart Taylor with 92 for 39 (cut 2) with Paul Geddes, 3rd on countback  (86 for 34)(cut 1) from Niall Murray (84 for 34).

The novelty winners were:

  • • NTP Hole #5 : Lim (7.4m)
  • • NTP Hole #12 : Ricardo (4.5m)
  • • Longest Drive (#8) : Niall Murray (219.6m)
  • • Lowest Gross :  Geoff McLaws (86)
  • • Last birdie : Enzo Filoni

COTD

We had 3 nominations this month for COTD :

  1. 1. Iain W – for fining flights where one person failed to get over the water on the first hole, just because his flight succeeded;
  2. 2. Tom Holmes – for not licking balls with fertilizer on them (?!!)
  3. 3. Roger McGowan – for putting a long putt to 3” from the hole, then missing that putt

Roger was narrowly voted as COTD, with Iain managing to deflect attention from himself (a trend which was repeated later)

AGM

The AGM was also held after the game, introduced by El Pres, Iain Wise, who thanked Ricardo Castro (Moneybags), Dave Evans (Scribe) & Martin Walsh (Fines Master) for their support.   Iain & Dave are continuing in their roles for 2019 with Roger McGowan taking over from Ricardo. (Special thanks are due to Ricardo for his enthusiastic fund raising over the past 2 years).   Paul Geddes joined the committee as President of Vice.    El Pres thanked Renaaissance Hotels though Robert Frager for further sponsorship of new golf balls which should see us through 2020.

El Pres reported :

We played 11 different courses throughout the year – visiting Glenmarie twice.   After the AGM game, we visited Kota Permai in February; other venues of note included Sungai Long and Templer Park.  It was good to visit the Chalet Suisse Restaurant after the October game; thanks again to Hans and Bernie for making this available.  I am sure we would like to visit again in 2019 – maybe for the Christmas Game?

Throughout the year we had 57 members who played 248 rounds.  In addition 29 guests played 49 rounds, so in total 86 players played 297 rounds.  We welcomed 13 new members.

Copies of the summary of the years results are in the notes provide.

A quick review would reveal that we have had 26 different players coming in the first 3 places.

The May Away was to Vung Tau, a new location recommended by Niall Murray, for which we had 18 tourists. The course at Paradise was average but Bluffs Ho Tram, played on days 2 and 3, was tremendous. The new venue proved successful and in spite of Andrew Robinson’s comment on the approach to the town “It doesn’t look sleazy enough”. It is likely we will return at some time in the future. It was good to catch up with the Overseas groupies, in particular Brian Jeffers and Wayne Beck who are regular May Away tourists along with “Hasty” Hewitt who was in good form.

It should also be mentioned that just before the May Away, one of our members Joe Lacy completed the London Marathon, a tremendous achievement. Joe along with his son raised over 10,000 pounds for Parkinson disease research.

In November, we returned to Bangkok with 21 players attending; the highlight of the trip being Gary Cooney nicking Lars’s wallet & the subsequent repercussions.

The number of local players for the 2 tours increased which is good to see as we were starting to become very dependent on the overseas members.

The Christmas game was held at Glenmarie and a good time was held by nearly everyone. It should be remembered when nominating members for the COTD award : “don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story!!!!”.  It was also great that 4 members donated free bottles for the après-game piss-up.

Finances

Iain/Ricardo briefly presented the finances; we have a healthy balance. There were no questions / comments.

January 2018 Game -Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia

The first game of 2018 was held at Kelab Rahman Putra, a very picturesque but challenging venue for some (including your Scribe !).

IMG_7114

With a new record of 32 players expecting to tee-off on the Hills Course including Honorary Member Ian Craighead “Crackers”, guests Steve Eldridge and Niall Murray and some of our new members, the news was broken by El Pres that we had to play the Lakes course due to hollow tining on all the greens on the Hills. The Lakes course is particularly difficult for the shorter hitters as holes 1, 2, 16, 17 & 18 and a number of others all require long carries over water; there were a lot of lost balls and blobs on the round !

20180117_171054_resizedIMG_7126

With Stan Constantinides playing off 28 handicap on his home course, he had to be a good bet for the win, though Robert Frager has been a model of consistency all year, averaging 38 points over the 7 games he has played, so could well challenge. But maybe there would be other contenders ? All will be revealed later …..

20180117_135004_resized20180117_134805_resized

The course was in good shape and the weather was good for most of the round though dark clouds were gathering ominously later in the afternoon. Then, with the first flight including Stan actually on the 18th green about to putt out, the sirens sounded so we all had to abandon the round even though it was not raining at the time. At this point, many people had had enough so headed for the showers and/or the bar. However, after ~ 30 minutes, no rain having arrived, the sirens sounded again to allow play to continue so a number of players opted to go out to complete their rounds. Unfortunately for Stan “no mates”, he could not find anyone to witness his putting for a potential par on the 18th so carded a blob rather than potentially 3 or 4 points; this would prove significant later !

IMG_7137IMG_7135

The majority of players then adjourned for a good three course dinner at the clubhouse accompanied by numerous jugs, plus some good wines provided by Richard Rodwell & Ricardo Castro (our sponsors for the wine prizes ).  We were joined at dinner by John Arkinstall, Richard Moss, Barry Cousins & his friend, Dick Stauffer who didn’t play but helped consume the beverages, all to the accompaniment of the delayed lightning & thunder.

Results

Compilation of the results proved a significant task with numerous people not completing the full 18 holes, then not adding their scores up (thanks to Dan Brod for helping to sort out the scores). However since a number of people had eventually completed all 18 holes, the results were based on a full round, with blobs (0 points) and the equivalent strokes being assigned for uncompleted holes.

Given this, and the difficulty of the course, only two players bettered or equaled their handicaps, with 22 players recording less than 30 points. The January medal winner was Mr Consistency, Robert Frager, with an excellent score of 91 for 37 (cut 4). Second was Paul Geddes with 91 for 36 (cut 2) ahead of the afore-mentioned Stan C with 101 for 35 (cut 1).

  3. Richard R for talking loudly during Berni’s backswing (Berni then put two balls in the water)

Tom was narrowly voted as COTD; with Stan managing to deflect attention from himself for the second month running

January 2017 Game & AGM – Kelab Rahman Putra

  • Thanks to our new 2017 scribe – Dave Evans – for the report below which includes asummary of the AGM.SCRIBE REPORT:

The first game of 2017 was held at Rahman Putra, a very challenging venue for some (including the Scribe !). 23 players were ready to tee-off on time, but with one player taking the scenic route to the club via Kota Permai resulting in one group starting late, and only completing 13 holes before the rains came (more anon).

The course was in good shape and the weather was fine, though very hot, at the start but later the heavens opened and a major storm hit, with thunder & lightning continuing for almost an hour. Play was suspended at ~5.05pm while players took shelter from the elements, surviving the ordeal with the help of F&B (more B, then F) provided liberally by Dan Brod !

On venturing back onto the course ~ 6.15pm, we were told the course was closed for the day so all adjourned to the clubhouse for more pre-dinner refreshments. As noted, the late-starting group had only completed 13 holes before the rains came so results for all were based on 13 holes only.

A four course dinner was taken at the clubhouse accompanied by numerous jugs, plus some good wines provided by RICHARD RODWELL (our sponsor for wine prize). We were joined at dinner by John Arkinstall, Richard Moss, Roddy Foo & Barry Cousins who didn’t play but helped consume the beverages.

    Results
