November 2023 Away Game – Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand

COMMITTEE:

EL PRES – Paul Geddes

VICE PRES – Iain Wise

MINISTER OF FINANCE – Michael Fenner-Smith

SCRIBE – Geoff McLaws

Wow, what a great turnout and wonderful golf trip our jaunt to Hua Hin was. Coming together on Sunday 12th November at the Wannarra Hotel, just around the corner from the ‘interesting’ area, we then gathered at Richard Green’s Bar on the Sunday for the start of a great week.

DAY 1.

For some, Monday morning started a bit grey but once we reached the beautiful links of Black Mountain Golf Club, and with the help of a bit of Baileys, that was all buts shrugged off. It is always a joy to play Black Mountain and while the fairways were great, the rough was deadly. Unfortunately, a lot of the tee boxes and some of the greens were in less than good condition and this let the course down, especially for the price of their green fees. However, I am pretty sure that this did not detract from the enjoyment of playing there once again.

There were some holdups around the tenth hole but El Pres chose to blame the group behind instead of those in front, citing the fact that the group behind had lost ground to them. Nonetheless, the rounds were completed in fairly good time and we all retired to the terrace for lunch and refreshments.

Presentations began with El Pres welcoming all of those who had travelled from overseas to be with us (most had travelled from overseas but that’s another story).

DAY 2.

Banyan Golf Club, my personal favourite in Hua Hin, is always a pleasure to play. It offers some enormous challenges especially if you miss the fairways. Keeping it in the short stuff can be tricky given the tee box views can be a bit daunting. The greens were running true if not a bit variable and the downhill putts were very tricky and quick. All in all, extremely enjoyable in good company and the predicted rain held off. This was the first day of the two day Horse and Jockey competition.

Once the game was over, we took over the terrace for our lunch and presentation.

El Pres praised the course as above and commented that the weather forecast was indeed, wrong!

DAY 3

Day 2 of the 2 day competition commences. Banyan Golf Course.

The lead flight of Ron, Peter D, Michael and Peter K teed off on time, followed by David H, Pietro, Stan and Colm.

Frank, Ted and Darryl (from Fusion Golf) then made up a three ball due to the non-appearance of Norm, followed by Gary, Geoff, Bernie and Paul.

When the last flight, consisting of the first day leaders, Brian, Iain, Dave and Richard teed off the conditions had deteriorated a bit and the low cloud and no sun was a sign of the weather to come.

After only 5 holes played for the last group, the rain started requiring a return to the clubhouse. The threatening weather of the previous day let loose and we had an absolute drenching waiting for it to clear. Patrons were holding umbrellas up on the terrace due to the driving rain.

El Pres almost called time on the game as the rain did not seem to be abating, but was shouted down to wait another 15 minutes before doing so. Miraculously, the rain clouds left us and the sun returned. What was even more miraculous was the drainage on the golf course which, 30 minutes earlier, looked more like a lake than a golf course.

We all went back to the course (even Pietro) and completed our rounds in surprisingly hot and sunny conditions that were at odds with the earlier weather. Aside from the bunkers, the course had recovered very well. This obviously meant that we all finished later and our late lunch was almost dinner.

El Pres began the presentation by roasting Norm Labbe for his no show today. The rain and delay were of course on the agenda but enough said above.

  • El Pres for whining about his caddy all f*%#in day.

……………………………drum roll…………………..

El Pres was unanimously voted COTD.

COOL BREEZE:

We gathered later at Cool Breeze restaurant for the tour dinner. This was a great choice of restaurant and the food was excellent. Of course, the company was second to none. I am sure that no-one left disappointed with our bellies full and looking for more adventures.

Peter D left unexpectedly early citing “need of files from his office” for something urgent. Due to an ambiguous message or a slightly boozy El Pres, it was assumed that Peter had to return to KL and would not be joining us on day 4 for the teams event.

El Pres went into overdrive to gather some ‘locals’ to play in the teams game managing to garner three prospects to fill the holes.

Then Peter D announced he was still in Hua Hin and intended to play. He was only apologising for leaving dinner early not leaving Thailand.

El Pres was in a dither. The golf course wouldn’t give us another tee time and how do you fit 21 players into 6 flights. As usual with this management group, all’s well that ends well.

Royal Springfield Golf Course was a bit of step down in course quality but the overall experience was very enjoyable. A very lovely layout with some very long holes, even from the whites.

Playing the ‘Mexican’ scramble, a none too popular game with some, as distinct from a Texas scramble, we had six teams, three of 4 players and three of 3 players.

Teams:

  1. Paul G, Colm O and Gordon (guest)
  2. Gary C, Ron Mc and Iain W
  3. Ricky (guest), Frank Mc and Stan C
  4. Geoff, John G (guest), Michael FS and Dave E
  5. Bernie, Richard, Peter D and Peter K
  6. Ted, Pietro, Brian and David H

The weather remained fine and warm throughout the round and we finished up in fairly good time. The lunch and refreshments followed with the presentation the penultimate act of El Pres.

A humorous interlude. Brian wasting beer and failing to clean up after himself.

Results:

6th Place – Team 3 – 84 gross                              5th Place – Team 6 – 78 gross

4th Place – Team 2 – 76 gross                          3rd Place –  Team 5 – 75 gross

2nd Place – Team 4 – 74 gross, and                              1st Place – Team 1 – 71 gross

COTD

  • David H for ordering a jug of beer only for himself.
  • Richard nominated Bernie for having Richard’s ball in his pocket.
  • Paul nominated Colm when he couldn’t find his pitching wedge for three holes and then asked PG if he could borrow his. Commented that PG had the same PW as his and then lo and behold discovered it was his actual PW. Caddies had ‘obviously’ screwed up!
  • Colm nominated Paul for the BS story above.
  • Iain was nominated for bringing all the KLOGS sponsored prize balls to Hua Hin but left them in the hotel room, causing the committee to buy balls as replacements.
  • Paul was nominated again for the ‘Swedish’ incident. **
  • Paul was nominated again for having borrowed 5K from Iain the previous night to cover certain bar fines incurred, when asked for the money back, realised he hadn’t paid the bar fine after all.
  • Iain was nominated for defiling a KLOGS hat.

El Pres was unanimously voted COTD.

COTT:

Nominations for COTT were:

  • Brian Jeffers for not taking any fines from himself as the fines master.
  • Paul for his numerous nominations on tour.
  • Brian Jeffers for being Brian Jeffers.
  • Iain for No name on tour shirts, not bringing the tour balls to the event and abuse of the KLOGS hat.
  • Brian Jeffers for taking a rabbit jumper back from Richard’s bar.

Brian was voted a very well deserved COTT.

This tour came to a very enjoyable close where we all said our goodbyes and promised to meet again in May.

SPONSORS:

Our sponsors should be mentioned because they support us throughout the year. Unfortunately, we couldn’t bring Ricardo’s wine and Iain left the balls in his hotel room but thank you Siggy for the thought.

Some happy family snaps.

**The Swedish incident involved a very well lubricated El Pres being chauffeured around in his golf cart as the lead cart in the group. At the crossover, El Pres’s buggy came upon a car driving along the cart path because the road was out of action. El Pres thought that his flight of four buggies should take priority over the one car driving toward them and proceeded to remonstrate, not with the driver, but with the ‘large Swedish passenger’ in the back seat. The large Swedish passenger got out after the driver demonstrated his inability to reverse the 20 meters to the passing place mounting the kerb. All was resolved in the end when El Pres took the high ground and ‘agreed’ to let the taxi pass after reversing all the buggies back 100 meters. Thnaks to all who attended from near and far!
