The December KLOGS event was held at the prestigious RSGC in Kuala Lumpur and played on the Old Course. Past El Pres Roddy Foo and other 6 other RSGC members kindly used their privileges to invite the non-member KLOGS contingent. Roddy also stepped in as Moneybags in the absence of Andrew Robinson who is way in the UK. Thank you Roddy! After lunch 19 players took to the course with 3 flights each teeing off from the 1st and 10th tee boxes.

Johann Bohi had arranged for excellent weather (although he did give a 10% chance of rain). A beautiful breezy day made walking on this course a pleasure even for those of us reaching senior status. El Pres decreed that we would play off the white tees although that piece of information reached some of us a bit late.

For those interested in why they played a lot of golf, the fault lies entirely with the types of grasses on the course. TifEagle Bermuda (Greens), Seashore Paspalum (Fairways and Tees), Cowgrass (Rough). The latter was quite deep in places so that it took some time to find a wayward ball.

A most pleasant way to spend an afternoon, considering the unfortunate people toiling away in those towers in the background.

Robert, Karl B. and Klaus posing like pros.

On the day only one player broke 90. Hans Bohi displayed his local knowledge by recording the only sub-90 score. The results are:

  • 1st place: Hans Bohi 89 gross 39 points cut 4
  • 2nd place: Iain Wise 97 gross 37 points cut 2
  • 3rd place: John Arkinstall 92 gross 35 points (ocb) cut 1
  • NTP front nine: Arthur Rodwell 3ft
  • NTP back nine: Ray Funnel 10ft
  • Longest Drive: Paul Kam
  • Last Birdie: Robert Frager
  • Lowest Gross: Paul Kam (Hans as winner no prize)

A big thank you goes to Hans Bohi for arranging the “Christmas” dinner in the Modesto restaurant. The combination of pizza, a spaghetti dish and the turkey main course gave the meal a distinct Italian flavour – Buon Natale. The dessert proved to be a wobbly pudding – Andrew Robinson will remember it from the last time around when it landed in his lap. Someone shared with us that it reminded him of his first girlfriend’s rear.

El Pres thanked our sponsors Ye Old Club House, Wines Direct, City Golf and Robert Frager. El Pres welcomed the guests Karl Beter, Phil Hollands, Paul Kam, Adil Ahmad and Arthur Rodwell. Since Arthur has played 3 times Richard will pay for his KLOGS entrance fee so that Arthur becomes a full member. Brian Imrie will become a full member from January 2014 onwards.

Richard Rodwell (Wines Direct) brought six bottles of an excellent South African 2012 Pinotage, which can also be purchased from him at a very reasonable price.

Alistair Guthrie (Ye Old Clubhouse) kindly donated a number of golf goodies, which El Pres doubling up as Father Christmas presented to all those who had not won a prize on the day. Thank you Alistair!

El Pres recapped the November Away to Siem Reap, which was a most enjoyable tour. Any venues outside of Thailand are now a real option occasionally.

The membership is requested to give some thought to AGM and the election of next year’s committee. Suggestions to El Pres by email please.

El Pres called for COTD nominations:

  • Tony Morris: For suggesting an Angiogram has a “happy ending”
  • El Pres: For misspelling a name on the starter’s list
  • Richard Rodwell: For trying to convince his father to cast a shadow over his ball hanging on the lip of a hole for 40 seconds as this would result in the ball dropping in.
  • Ray Funnel: For turning up at the gala dinner wearing golf shorts.
  • El Pres: For not communicating the dinner dress code
  • El Pres: For nominating someone with an entertaining story, which the Scribe has forgotten, but irrelevant to the day’s proceedings. (Des brought out the constitution).

El Pres was elected COTD

In wrapping up El Pres wished everyone Happy Holidays.
