October 2022 Game – Sungai Long Golf & Country Club

The October 2022 game was held at the Sungai Long Golf & Country Club.  19 players including 4 guests (Tom Henson – technically, a returning KLOGer from 2008, Kenny Carmichael, Kevin King, Benji Sheehy), teed-off the whites at 7.30am with a 2 tee box start.   The course was in very good condition and most appreciated the greens.   Most flights finished quickly but #2 dropped well behind and was ultimately fined.   The weather was initially cool, heating up through the morning.

Post-game, 18 golfers plus Andrew Robinson, Barry Cousins & Ian Durant enjoyed a substantial meal at the nearby Zheng Palace at BMC Mall, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer & good wines. El Pres commended Clive Gordon for organizing a very successful charity golf event.

The day wrapped up for most ~ 2.30pm.

Results

Tom Henson (guest) posted the lowest gross (71!) & best Stableford (39) but, as a guest, was illegible for the main prize for which we had a 3-way tie, decided on countback.   The October medal winner was Paul Geddes (El Pres) with 82 for 37 (cut 4), with Clive Gordon 2nd with 87 for 37, then Iain Wise 3rd with 94 for 37.   Tom H did win a sleeve of balls for the lowest gross.

August 2022 Game – Kota Permai Golf & Country Club

17th August 2022

The August 2022 game was held at the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club. 22 players including 3 new players Hayden, Jega, and Campbell attending their first game, Mick for his second and last but by no means least Chia.

With the course failing to tell us about the hollow tinning that was undertook on the previous Sunday, we were concerned about the expected bumpy greens. Fortunately it wasn’t as bad as expected, but the heavy sand made chipping and putting significantly slower than we usually experience here but the balls were generally running true. And the scores reflected some good golf and the bad not being blamed on the greens!!!

The weather was initially cool, heating up through the morning but no rain delays. Given the number of showers we are seeing in the late afternoons. It seems the morning start is still the best option for now.

We teed-off on time with the rest of the course in its usual immaculate condition.
The speed of golf was probably as good as could be expected however Stans flight seemed to have been held up arriving a bit later than the rest to the restaurant!

Post-game, the golfers and two lunch guests Andrew and Barry enjoyed a substantial meal at Pantai Seafood Nilai, accompanied by numerous beers (36 for starters) & 6 bottles of good wine. The day wrapped up for at least half of those attending by 3pm with 10 staying for one or two or well lets just say a few more rounds!. Thanks to those who stood their hand and assisted in raiding the fridges! Needless to say the restaurant was reopening when we were leaving!

Results

The August medal winner by a considerable margin was Scott Milton with a fantastic gross of 77 and 45 points playing off 14 (after his initial handicap of 15 was cut post game after a check, after a couple of weeks of form is now index 10) fined 100 myr. Scott would have been cut 9 but with the handicap restrictions he is cut to 6, 4 below his index handicap.! Second with an impressive 41 points of a generous handicap of 18 was Clive Gordon cut 2. Now a more realistic 16! Third and continuing his good form Stan Constantinides with 31 points cut 1 to 17.

Was there any doubt?? No! Geoff I think even voted for himself, and began the walk before the ball had dropped! Ably downing the mug in a one’r.

July 2022 Game – Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club

The July 2022 game was held at the Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club.  15 players including 4 guests (Scott Milton, Chris Miller, Chia Weng Lock & Michael Ferner-Smith) with one call-off due to illness, teed-off the whites at 8am with a 2 tee box start.   Flights off #10 progressed well but those off #1 were held up by a 6-ball flight; flight 1 was able to play through but the others were not so fast to catch them up later in the round !   The weather was initially cool, heating up through the morning.

Post-game, 14 golfers enjoyed a substantial meal at Restoran Loon Sing near Nilai, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer & good wines provided as a departing gift by Bernd Kaiser.  The day wrapped up for most ~ 2.30pm.

Results

The July medal winner by a considerable margin was Bernie Schobert with a splendid 80 for 45 (cut 9), with Stan C 2nd with 91 for 37, then Thomas Stadler 3rd on count back from Ricardo Castro, with 86 & 85 for 35 respectively.   Paul Geddes won a sleeve of balls for the lowest gross of 85 (with 30 points).  Bernie nominated Siggi to down his mug

We had the following (weak) nominations this month for COTD.

  1. Thomas – for hitting a bunker shot & hitting Pietro near his privates
  2. Wee – after a late night, went to wrong entrance that was closed, then had to be guided to club house, then had to go home with a severe hangover. (Ineligible as did not attend the lunch)
  3. Ricardo  – for forgetting his birthday (pin no on locker); denied of course !
  4. Bernd – for donating 6 bottles of wine with failed corks thereby needing a sieve as his parting gift

Bernd in his last KLOGS before departing home unsurprisingly was voted COTD ! Thanks very much for the wine which was decanted and drunk ! Very nice indeed !

June 2022 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

It was great to return to Glenmarie Valley course. One of the best courses in Malaysia with no two holes the same and beautiful scenery. After considerable rain the night before the course held up well with only a few wet patches before the greens. With check in pretty smooth, we set of virtually on time but for the usual local flight nipping in front, 5 flights took to the course.

Speed of play was a little slow on the front nine until the heavens eventually opened with the first flight on hole 17. After waiting half an hour to play and then reaching a completely waterlogged green it was clear it would take a long time for the green to clear. Given the time booking for lunch it was clear all flights wouldn’t be able to finish for some time. El Pres called it and headed to the restaurant with his flight. Those who stayed on the course waited long enough to complete and the third flight played through the second one in the rain! By the time they reached the 17th they were able to play around the remaining puddles! The restaurant was fairly amenable and third group arriving an hour later and still before the second group off 10 that had been a held up buy a group in front at the crossover. We had a fairly enjoyable lunch at the Twelve Roads Restaurant with much liquids consumed. The restaurant was perhaps named because of the twelve turnoffs required to get there from Glenmarie with some having difficulty! even though it only took 20 minutes! However the food was excellent.

After lunch El Pres thanked all for attending and welcomed three new players to the fold with Brian Clark and Seve Sierra on their first games and Chris Miller (who attended the May away) participating in now his second KLOGS game but first in KL.

Some players were more prepared for the day than others!

Results

The scoring was good with 7 players hitting or bettering their handicaps, the February winner was El Pres, who’s score was 39 after 16 before his rain stop, but with 4 points added to his score in true KLOGS fashion he is cut 7!, with a projected 79 for 43 points. Paul was playing of a max 14, 4 above his index. Now playing off 7. Second on count back was Ricardo Castro with 84 for 38 cut 2. With third place Geoff McLaws with 81 for 38 cut 1. Ricardo our wine sponsor kindly donated his bottle of fiz back to the society! Thanks Ricardo.

El Pres – June Winner and successful down in one of a very cold pint!

COTD

Nominations this month for COTD were few and far between, with KLOGGERS apparently being on their best behavior! as follows:

  1. Tony nominated Sigi for only remembering he had the tape for measuring the NTP after the third par 3.
  2. El Pres Nominated Tony as it was he who passed on the responsibility for carrying the tape and suggested Sigi took it before play!.

With no other nominations Tony won on a supermajority!

Showing his vast experience downing the mug in short measure!

Fines

With the red and white boxes on most holes very close to each other there were limited ladies tee box penalties. The fines were also limited, only one for late arrival! Probably a record for KLOGS.

Joining us today from afar was our honorary member Mike Smith

Mike deciding to share his vast experience continued to impart his wisdom over a few more  pints at the after party in Bangsar!

April 2022 Game – Palm Garden Golf Club

The April 2022 game was held at the picturesque Palm Garden Golf Club.  20 players including our Honorary Octogenarian (Mike Smith) plus 6 guests (Terry Freckleton, Christian Swift, Peter Dabrowski, Mike Garwood, Erik Stoel & Robert Bellavance ), teed-off at 8am with a 2 tee box start, most playing off the Blue tees since the course was deemed ‘short’.  Three of the golfers (including your scribe) opted to play off the White tees with a 2 stroke penalty applied.   Flights off #10 progressed well but those off #1 were held up by a 6-ball flight; flight 1 was able to play through but the others were not so fortunate so finished well after most.   The weather was initially cool, heating up through the morning.  Unusually, there were quite a lot of complaints about the greens, which were playing very slow.

Post-game, 15 golfers enjoyed a substantial meal at Restoran East of Highway accompanied by numerous jugs of beer & good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize).  The day wrapped up for most ~ 3pm.

Results

The use of the Blue tees resulted in only 1 player bettering his handicap !; the April medal winner was R Wee with a splendid 80 for 41 (cut 5), with Bernd Kaiser 2nd on count back from Robert Bellavance both with 90 for 34.   Paul Geddes won a sleeve of balls for the lowest gross of 87 (with 33 points).

Erik became, possibly, the first person to get 3 NTPs but not win anything as he didn’t attend the lunch; the prize for 2 holes therefore went to others

In Memoriam

COTD

We had the following nominations this month for COTD.

  1. Wee (self nomination !)  – for not wearing a KLOGS shirt
  2. Vind – for nominating a guest for not wearing a KLOGS shirt
  3. Sigi – D’Qd for having too many clubs – an extra driver had been put in his bag at some point but he did not know the owner
  4. Iain – for leaving his caddy behind when she was in the ladies & for not forcing his way past the 6-ball

Iain unsurprisingly was voted COTD !

March 2022 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club – Garden Course

The March 2022 game was held at the beautiful Glenmarie Garden course which was in great condition despite the recent rain, though with a few bumpy greens on the second nine.  7 flights (26 players, including 4 guests) teed off on time; the flights off #1 were only slightly delayed by a slow 3 ball ahead so finished in ~4.5 hours, but the flights off #10 suffered badly (more later).  (Stan, unusually, was late because of a puncture, but still made the tee-off time). The weather was excellent and the decision to stick with morning games at the moment still seems to be paying off.

After an enjoyable game (for most), we assembled at a new venue (Restoran Twelve Road) near the Federal Highway & LDP, for some excellent & different food and copious amounts of lubricant.  As a result of the delays above, players from all 3 flights off #1 arrived well before any of the flights off #10, the first 2 of which were 3-balls.

Results

Scoring was very good for the significant number playing with just a few struggling at the lower end of the table.  The winner was our ‘Pres of Vice’, Iain Wise, with a respectable 91 for 40 (cut 4). Second place went to the late Stan C with 90 for 39 (cut 2) and third place to Berni S with 87 for 36 (cut 1). Special mention goes out to our guests Erik Stoel & Stewart Beck, with their excellent scores of 94 for 40 & 74 for 37 respectively.

Golfer of the Year

The opportunity was taken to present Andrew Chez with his trophy for GotY 2021

COTD

There was a not a lot to report re the COTD with no one offering any serious competition to Clive  :

  • After criticizing the KLOGS members about not being on the MyGolf2u app, Clive proceeded to show El Pres how easy it was to use and score. After scoring on a hole on the second nine he noticed the par was 4 on the app and 5 on the card, stating he would talk to the developer. A couple of holes later a par 4 was a par 3 in the app. El Pres asked him to check he was on the right course, only for him to find out he was scoring on the Valley course!
  • To cement the award, on the 14th tee, his ball returned to the tee box, after hitting a lamppost

Fines

There were 4 jugs today & only a few smaller fines

January 2022 Game – Sungai Long Golf & Country Club

The first game of 2022 was held at the scenic Sungai Long Golf & Country Club.   24 players including 3 guests teed-off promptly at 8am off 2 tee boxes, and with hardly anyone else on the course, made very good time, the first flight finishing at 12pm.

The course was in very good shape and the weather was good for the whole of the round, making for an excellent morning’s golf

23 players then adjourned for an excellent meal at a new venue, the Zheng Palace at the nearby BCM Mall, where they were joined by Andrew Robinson, Richard Moss & Ian Durant.  Needless to say, numerous jugs were consumed, plus some good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prizes)

Results

Six players bettered or equaled their handicaps, and the scoring at the top was fairly close.  However, the clear January medal winner with a 3-stroke margin was Bernhard Romahn, with a score of 82 for 41(cut 5).  Second was Paul Geddes with 82 for 38 (cut 2) and 3rd was Allan Wright (99 for 37) (cut 1).

Full results below:

Fines

There were numerous fines, in particular for failing to bring along a previous winner’s tankard for the toasts, El Pres seeking to make up the depleted coffers.

COTD

We had only 2 (weak) nominations this month for COTD :

  1. Pres of Vice for something vague!
  2. Roland Steiner for attempting to tee-off from the Red tees

Roland was unanimously voted as COTD

AGM

The AGM was also held after the game, introduced by El Pres, Paul Geddes, who thanked Iain Wise (VP), Stan, Ricardo & Dave Evans (Scribe) for their support.

In Memoriam

Sadly, during April 2021, we lost one of our longest-serving members, Ian “Crackers” Craighead.  Ian was one of the very early members of the society and instrumental in getting the group off the ground; he served as the third EL Pres in 1992 and was Klogger of the Year on three occasions 1994, 95 and 2003.  We had a moment of reflection for Ian and other absent Kloggers.

Finances

We had a loss of Rm500 for the year, as a result of increased costs of games & reduced number of players due to COVID-19.

Annual Awards

The highlight of the lunch was the presentation of the annual awards

A) Played 6 Games (Bottle of Wine):

December 2021 Game – Templer Park Country Club

The final game of 2021 was held at the immaculate Templer Park Country Club.  20 players including 3 guests (Craig Schul, Erik Stoel, Sam Clark) teed-off soon after 8am with a 2 tee box start.   Although the course was not particularly busy, flights teeing-off from Hole #1 were badly held up over the whole round to the extent that some players abandoned !. The weather was initially sunny & hot with a cooling breeze springing up later with a threat of rain.

Eighteen of us then made our way to the Chalet Suisse restaurant in Ampang, where we were joined by various groupies (Barry Cousins, Richard Moss, Andrew Robinson, Berni Schobert & Ian Durant) and enjoyed a splendid 4-course meal, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer, good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize); some even stayed on to try various shots.

Results

Only 4 players bettered or equaled their handicaps but the December medal winner was Julien Hodson-Walker with 81 for 45 (cut 9), returning after nearly 20 years absence & drinking from his 1999 mug !  Ricardo Castro was second with 82 for 41 (cut 2) with Helmut Dicknoether third with 95 for 36 (cut 1).   Andrew Chez had the lowest gross of 75 (with 38 points).

November 2021 Game – Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia

The November 2021 game was held at the challenging Rahman Putra Golf Club – Lakes course.

With a few regulars away on their jolly’s we were a compact 12 today. We welcomed Tony Lynch returning for his second game with KLOGS today, unfortunately soon to depart for the Philippines.

The club was a complete nightmare to deal with and put back our 8 am booking to 8:37. They then proceeded to cancel our booked set lunch, advising it would be easier for them if we ordered ala carte! (Malaysian logic).

After a fair bit of rain which eventually stopped at 8:15, the siren went off to open the course at 8:40. The club in their wisdom instead of pushing all flights back, decided to cancel all pre-siren flights and requested we all re-join the queue and rebook for a 9 hole only game. It was complete chaos. That clearly was not going to happen! and after some forceful ‘discussion’ they agreed to allow us to play as booked but basically after all the members, who had jumped in our allocated buggies, got away! We eventually got off at 9:35. We won’t be back any time soon.

The course was in good nick and the greens on the second nine running fast despite the rain although the bunkers were pretty wet and proved a challenge.

The first flight off ten were waiting to tee off when one of their flight realized he had no clubs, fortunately the caddy was spared for not putting the clubs on as requested. Clubs were soon located at the Drop off point. After sculling one not-so-cold beer found in the bag, he eventually teed off just on time!

As expected, the golf was slow but enjoyable for most of the players! Unfortunately, the halfway huts accepted only member payment to account, so beer drinking on course was somewhat curtailed. That said, remembering an absent KLOGGERS RP membership number, El Pres found a work around! Cheers Pietro!

After an enjoyable game, ‘for most’, we reconvened at the Drop zone, or as the club stated in their confirmation email the ‘Drip’ zone. They must have known the forecast. Anyway, shock horror they had forgotten to book the room, as discovered by Ricardo when he went to drop off the wine. The shambolic performance of the club continued with half of the bruschetta starters arriving after we had finished soup and main courses, and with several players being told they had run out of soup, but were later offered the soup that hadn’t run out whilst eating their mains.

Anyway, to make up for it a number of banana splits and tiramisus were consumed, along with the usual few jugs and some nice wine!

Results

For most, the scoring was tough, with a fair few wet lay’s before the greens, a high tally of chunks was endured! The winner with a great score, considering the conditions of 91 for 37 points (cut 4) was Thomas Stadler, apparently single putting several greens. Unfortunately, his beer drinking performance was less impressive, it taking him 4 or 5 attempts to drink the winner’s mug! Second place went to Helmut Dicknoether with 102 for 31 points cut 2 and third was Bernd Kaiser 91 for 30 (cut 1).

COTD
There was a not a lot to report re the COTD, the undisputed winner taking the title before a ball had been struck!

Yes it was the plonker who tried to play without his clubs and considering his first nine he would have been better without them! Taking the prize unchallenged and by a unanimous decision it was El Pres, who accepted the sleeve of ball graciously and then proceeded to show Thomas how to drink a beer!

October 2021 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club – Valley Course

The October 2021 game was held at the beautiful Glenmarie Valley course. After one of the worst days of rain in KL, lasting the whole day before, the course was in remarkably good condition, with many of the greens running at 10+. Five flights teed off ~on time, with one no show!, which will be a costly long lay in! Without much delay the first flight finished in a little over 4 hours. The weather was excellent and the decision to stick with morning games at the moment, seems to be paying off, so far!

After an enjoyable game, ‘for most’, we assembled at Pantai Seafood for some excellent food and copious amounts of lubricant. We were joined by Barry and Andrew who assisted in our efforts to drink all the red wine.

Scoring was very good for the majority with just a few struggling at the lower end of the table. However, Bernd did go home in a huff with 19 points, deciding he would rather go home and play with his new chopper, which was being delivered. Not sure if he owes any Jugs?

Special mention goes out to Chez, with an excellent score of 78 off 4, an NTP of ~1m and a fantastic eagle on the last hole, for which he got his sleeve of balls.

The winner was our ‘Pres of Vice’ Iain Wise, with a respectable 93 for 38 points off 23, winning on count back (cut 4). Second place went to Robert Frager, who had spent the previous days questioning his handicap, scoring an excellent 83 for 38 points off 13 (cut 2). Third place went to Albert Koh ocb with 80 for 37 points off 9 (cut 1), from Thomas Stadler with 90 for 37.

We had 4 guest today who all enjoyed the day but perhaps not all enjoyed their golf – R Wee, Tony Lynch, Mike Garwood and Robert Bellavance. Hope to see you guys back in November.

There were 6 jugs today which were sorely needed given the unexpected caddy fees! as well as a few late arrivals (thanks to Stan for collecting the dosh and recording the latecomers).

Next Game

Wednesday 17th November – planned to be at Rahman Putra (awaiting confirmation)
