January 2012 Game at KGSAAS & AGM

Scribe Report

KGSAAS

18th January 2012

Course:

KGSAAS was in super condition with the possible exception of some small patches on a few of the greens. The fairways were as good as you will find anywhere. This is not the most difficult layout that we play but from the Blues it’s pretty challenging for the genuine high handicappers and the older Kloggers.

The club put on a nice light lunch at banquet style tables on the Golfers Terrace, all very pleasant.

The Game:

The game got off to a prompt 1pm start in bright sunny and breezy conditions but by half way rain was threatening with dark skies building, the rumble of distant thunder and the occasional flash of lightning but mercifully the rain kept away and bar a few spots towards the end, it was a dry game. The only blot on the afternoon (for some of us) was the overzealous attention of the Marshal who tracked the leading flight for much of the 2nd nine after a delay over 2 lost balls on the 9th and this rather spoiled the game for some. But as we were round in 4Hrs 20Mins this was not unduly slow.

Apres Golf:-

KGSAAS put on an excellent dinner in a private room with fine views from the adjoining balcony over the course. The staff were attentive and efficient and the entire evening proceeded smoothly.

After dinner we had the prize giving for the January Medal.

The AGM

The AGM was called to order at 7:30pm.

El Pres Address

As outgoing President I can report that the society completed a full fixture of games in 2011 with 10 local venue games played on 9 different courses (we played Glenmarie twice) and 2 Aways; Jakarta in May and Chiang Mai in November.

For the home games the average attendance was a rather disappointing 17 while the Aways attracted 7 participants to Jakarta and 19 to Chiang Mai.

Jakarta was particularly disappointing with such a low turnout for what proved to be a good location for an Away. Great golf courses and wonderful weather with little delay due to traffic. David Hewitt made the trip from Australia and was the only “overseas” member.

Chiang Mai was a great success with 17 members and 2 guests enjoying some lovely but demanding golf courses played in glorious weather.  We had overseas stalwarts from England, Ireland, Australia and Thailand as well as a guest from Canada so a truly international contingent.

Of the 10 home games 2 were unfortunately affected by weather but all were completed, although the game at KGPA saw 4 members retire part way through because of the rain. Guy’s golf is not a fair weather game. It was particularly disappointing that 3 of these retirees were from one flight leaving their playing partner stranded and having to tag along with another flight to complete his round. Nuff said.

The level of membership continues to give cause for concern with only 2 new members during the year; John Laidley & Larry Book. Welcome to KLOGS guys. The Constitution limits the membership to “50 Active (Malaysian Based) players.” Currently we have 41 Malaysian based members who by virtue of having played at least one game during 2011 can be considered “active”. We are welcoming 2 new members today and so there is room for 7 more.

I wish to thank my outgoing committee members; Richard Moss ‘VP’ and Andrew Robinson ‘Money Bags’ for their valuable assistance.

I want to extend my best wishes to the new committee and pledge my full support for a tough task ahead.

My sincere thanks go to our faithful sponsors Alistair Guthrie of “The Old Clubhouse” now located at City Golf, BSC, Robert Frager of “Renaissance Hotels” who have given us today RM3000 towards a new supply of Balls, Richard Rodwell of “Wines Direct” and “City Golf”.

I now call upon Money Bags, Andrew Robinson, to present the “Accounts Summary” for 2011.

Treasures Report

The KLOGS coffers ended the year with a balance of RM8931, being 16% up on the opening balance at the start of the year. A healthy situation but one that was much boosted by Kevin’s hole-in-one at Templer Park in March.

We made a surplus at 6 venues but lost significant dosh at Glenmarie (2 games) and Sungai Long.  The reality is that at the present ‘Green Fee’ of RM220 we cannot play the ‘better courses’ on a regular basis.

Honest jugs and Subscriptions account for a significant 14% of income.

There was an imbalance regarding Shirts with RM3370 spent on new shirts, but sales only amounting to RM2070.  We have 26 mixed shirts in stock which at RM50 a pop is worth RM1300..We need to clear them during the coming year!

We have entered 2012 in sound financial health, due in no small part to our generous sponsors.

Winner.    El Pres (Mike Smith) 43 Votes. May Away Jakarta

While sitting on the lovely veranda at Cengkareng after the game reflecting on the day’s events and thanking the Marshal for her intervention that enabled us to finish in good time for the flight home it suddenly dawned on him that he had left his passport, E ticket & house keys in the hotel room safe. Shit!!!! A frantic call to the hotel prompted a search and the missing barang was found and was passed to a Bluebird Limo for transfer to the airport. It pitched up at 18:50 just before the desk closed for the 19:35 flight home.

2nd place.    El Pres (Mike Smith)  35 Votes. Berjaya Hills, September

Reaching the green on the 14th he waited for his turn to putt and asked his caddy for his ball. She said she didn’t have it and pointed to the other caddy who also said she didn’t have it. El Pres, getting agitated said loudly “who marked my ball?” Much searching of pockets (of both caddies and their golfers) went on and as El Pres turned away fuming he checked his own pocket and found his ball.

3rd place.   Andrew Robinson  27 Votes. Kajang Hill, Feruary

For bringing his wife to the course. His excuse was that she had given him a lift to the course and she was “just popping in for a drink”.

Presidents Acceptance Address. (Verbatim as received from El Pres.)

The committee is there to serve the members and ensure the meetings are for enjoyment by all.

A need to differentiate the various societies of which some members have Multi-memberships.

Review the monthly green fees and costs generally including dinner or just snacks after the game.

Include guest fees for the monthly trophy games on the Aways.

Review the courses to be played and maybe consider some elite courses not played by weekend societies. Also consider the frequency of games if there is a desire to play more expensive courses.

Constitution is for guidance.

Aways to be decided by taking into account the views of members – I prefer Thailand. There was a substantial body of opinion wanting to go to Angeles for the May Away.

Noted the difference between guests and potential members.

Thanks to the Sponsors.

There then followed a lengthy discussion where members put several points of interest to El Pres for his further consideration.

Presentation to retiring President.

El Pres Richard Moss then presented retiring President Mike Smith with a Pewter Tankard to commemorate his term in office.

There being no other business the AGM closed at about 9:30pm.
