June 2022 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

It was great to return to Glenmarie Valley course. One of the best courses in Malaysia with no two holes the same and beautiful scenery. After considerable rain the night before the course held up well with only a few wet patches before the greens. With check in pretty smooth, we set of virtually on time but for the usual local flight nipping in front, 5 flights took to the course.

Speed of play was a little slow on the front nine until the heavens eventually opened with the first flight on hole 17. After waiting half an hour to play and then reaching a completely waterlogged green it was clear it would take a long time for the green to clear. Given the time booking for lunch it was clear all flights wouldn’t be able to finish for some time. El Pres called it and headed to the restaurant with his flight. Those who stayed on the course waited long enough to complete and the third flight played through the second one in the rain! By the time they reached the 17th they were able to play around the remaining puddles! The restaurant was fairly amenable and third group arriving an hour later and still before the second group off 10 that had been a held up buy a group in front at the crossover. We had a fairly enjoyable lunch at the Twelve Roads Restaurant with much liquids consumed. The restaurant was perhaps named because of the twelve turnoffs required to get there from Glenmarie with some having difficulty! even though it only took 20 minutes! However the food was excellent.

After lunch El Pres thanked all for attending and welcomed three new players to the fold with Brian Clark and Seve Sierra on their first games and Chris Miller (who attended the May away) participating in now his second KLOGS game but first in KL.

Some players were more prepared for the day than others!

Results

The scoring was good with 7 players hitting or bettering their handicaps, the February winner was El Pres, who’s score was 39 after 16 before his rain stop, but with 4 points added to his score in true KLOGS fashion he is cut 7!, with a projected 79 for 43 points. Paul was playing of a max 14, 4 above his index. Now playing off 7. Second on count back was Ricardo Castro with 84 for 38 cut 2. With third place Geoff McLaws with 81 for 38 cut 1. Ricardo our wine sponsor kindly donated his bottle of fiz back to the society! Thanks Ricardo.

El Pres – June Winner and successful down in one of a very cold pint!

COTD

Nominations this month for COTD were few and far between, with KLOGGERS apparently being on their best behavior! as follows:

  1. Tony nominated Sigi for only remembering he had the tape for measuring the NTP after the third par 3.
  2. El Pres Nominated Tony as it was he who passed on the responsibility for carrying the tape and suggested Sigi took it before play!.

With no other nominations Tony won on a supermajority!

Showing his vast experience downing the mug in short measure!

Fines

With the red and white boxes on most holes very close to each other there were limited ladies tee box penalties. The fines were also limited, only one for late arrival! Probably a record for KLOGS.

Joining us today from afar was our honorary member Mike Smith

Mike deciding to share his vast experience continued to impart his wisdom over a few more  pints at the after party in Bangsar!

October 2019 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

Twenty-two Kloggers attended the picturesque Glenmarie Golf & Country Club to play the Valley course; considering the recent incessant rain, the course was in superb condition with the greens running well and true.   Play got off on time with a two-tee box start; despite the rain returning twice and a short interruption for some due to lightning, we all managed to complete our rounds.   A remarkable feat considering the monsoon afternoon weather that has been prevailing over the last 2 weeks.

For those leaving the course early, the traffic was not too bad; for flight 6, it was nearly 7.30pm by the time they arrived at the Pantai Seafood restaurant.   Jimmy was even later having stopped for a burger on the way.  Here we were joined by our Groupies, Barry and Richard. Food was ordered by El Pres and promptly served after the arrival of the latecomers, who were later fined for their tardiness.  Thanks to Nicky for providing the excellent red and white wine.

Results

The monthly medal winner for October was Lim Hong, with an excellent score of 83 for 45 points (cut 9 !).  Runner up for the second-month running was Geoff McLaws with 75 for 44 points (cut 2).   El Pres was 3rd with 93 for 43 points (cut 1).

COTD

There were several nominations for COTD;  the main contenders were :

  1. Nicky proposed all those that did not hear the lightning siren.
  2. Stuart proposed Bernhard as, when looking for Stuarts ball, thought he had found the ball but then declared it was a piece of paper
  3. Edwin proposed Nicky for causing caddie confusion
  4. Siggi for not knowing what 9 inches is in metric equivalent.

The voting was close between Nicky and Bernhard but after a second check, Bernhard was declared the winner.

December 2018 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

IMG_3530

An excellent turnout of 28 players for the Christmas game at Glenmarie.  The membership were treated to festive chocolates before play.  It was good to welcome His Excellency Nicky Lambsdorf, the German Ambassador, to the group. We were off exactly on time with the usual two-tee box start. The recent wet weather always threatened but held off until 5 o’clock when the heavens eventually opened. The shower whilst heavy lasted only until 5-30 and those that wished to were able to return to the course to finish their rounds.

Dinner was at Pantai Seafood Restoran; most people arrived quickly, however those that used wrong WAZE were significantly delayed, including Ricardo, Niall and Roland, the latter arriving after 8-30pm when all the food had already been devoured.  It was great to see John Arkinstall and Barry Cousins, who joined us for dinner.

Paul Geddes did an excellent job ordering the food and also assisted El Pres in checking the scorecards as Ricardo was still lost on the way.

A good show with all members sporting their festive attire. EL PRES rented out some spare hats and with a little swapping and imagination with Bernie’s shirt no one was fined for dress code violations.  Thanks also to those that contributed bottles Stan, Hans, Enzo joining the example set by El Pres – most appreciated. The remainder have until next month to seek a reprieve,

EL PRES welcomed our guests, Louis Eyles, Bernd Kaiser and Nick Lambsdorf who unfortunately could not make dinner due to another engagement.

Results

The result was straight forward with Ricardo scoring 86 for 42 points (cut 6), second was Kaswira with 88 for 38 points (cut 2) and third was Juerg Stoll with 99 for 37 points (cut 1).

COTD

We had several nominations; the main contenders are summarized below.

  1. Ricardo for having a net 86 which when doubled equaled the number of seconds 172 for him to drink his winners reward. Ricardo for being one of the first to leave the club and be nearly last to get to the restaurant. Ricardo for causing confusion on hole 2 NTP by removing the tape from the green so the following flights could not record their distances.
  2. EL PRES for not providing protection for the novelty hole record sheets which got very wet with the rain.
  3. Ray Funnel for cursing his caddy for giving him the wrong club then hitting it only 5 metres.

Ricardo was voted COTD.

August 2017 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

20170816_152633_resized

The August game was held at the beautiful Glenmarie Golf & Country Club, playing the Garden course. As a result of good organization by the Club & El Pres, 20 players including 3 guests (Martin Belderink, Kaz Takita & Joe Lacy) teed-off slightly early with a two tee box start.

IMG-20170817-WA0001IMG-20170817-WA0009

The course itself was in very good condition though greens were rather slow so many people struggled with their putting, with few long putts dropping and many shots left short. A very long putt by Jarno for birdie on the Par 5 #16 was one of the few putting highlights from your scribes flight.

The weather was initially very hot but then became cool & overcast, with rain threatening to interrupt the round. However, it held off so the first flight was finished by ~ 5.10 pm and the others following soon after.

Eighteen of us then made our way to the nearby Lala Chong Seafood Restaurant in Ara Damansara, some of us via rather circuitous routes (see later), where we enjoyed good food ordered by El Pres, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer, plus good wines provided by RICHARD RODWELL (our sponsor for the wine prize). The evening wrapped up for most ~ 8pm.

Results

Given the tricky playing conditions mentioned above, only 6 players equaled or bettered their handicaps. The August medal winner by a considerable margin was John Arkinstall, with an impressive score of 89 for 47 (cut 11 !). Second was decided on countback in favour of Mike Smith with 92 for 42 (cut 2) ahead of Ricardo Castro with 87 for 42 (cut 1).

  • NTP winner #2 : Jarno K (5.1m)
  • NTP winner #5 : Kaswira (7.08m)
  • NTP winner #12 : Joe Lacy (5.65m)
  • NTP winner #17 : Ron Linden (3.63m)
  • Lowest gross : Ted Parslow (85)
  • Last birdie : Iain Wise

COTD

We had 4/5 nominations this month for COTD.

  1. Ted/Mike S – for poor driving/navigation on course, mixing up a Par 5 for a (very long) Par 3. As course designer, Ted Parslow should have known his way round
  2. Stan – for a 200m drive (vertically) which did not reach the ladies tee, and a second drive which hit a 100m marker and returned 100m to the tee
  3. Rick – for impatiently driving into the back of your scribes buggy, while the caddy was stood on the back, your scribe having paused to take photos for this report
  4. Dave E – for requesting an early tee-off for his flight so he would have time to compile the scores, then taking 45 minutes for the 10 minute drive to the restaurant due to a “Waze moment”

Voting was split, however the winner of this prestigious award was ultimately Ted (I only designed the greens) Parslow
