November Away 2019 – Chiang Mai, Thailand

img_3561.jpeg

The KLOGS Away Tour from 18th-22nd November 2019 went off very smoothly for all, thanks to the thorough planning by El Pres, Iain Wise.  The KL contingent was joined by participants from the UK, Australia and Thailand, supported by fitness coach, Richard Moss.   Peter Hayes & Lars Faerch were welcomed as new members & Edwin Ferner & Robert Frager as tour virgins (Robert after 20 years with KLOGS).

Tour accommodation was at the Duangtawan Hotel on Loi Kroh Rd; the hotel has seen better days and was very busy for the first couple of days, but it was fine for our needs.  It was also handy for the cultural attractions favoured by the group.

1st Day – Monthly KLOGS Medal – Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort

The course, scenery and weather were beautiful; we played Courses B & C, off the white tees.

  Results

The May medal winner with a score of 84 for 43 points was Ricardo Castro (cut 7).   Second and lowest gross was Geoff McLaws with 77 for 40 (cut 2) & third with 94 for 38, Pietro Martucci (cut 1).   Most gross was your scribe, a position he easily maintained for the 3 days !   Despite the generally good scores, there were numerous jugs incurred (see below)

3rd Day – 2nd Day of Competition – Alpine Golf Resort

On Thursday morning at 6.55am, many of the group were awakened by an unusual experience – their rooms were swaying.  It wasn’t the Baileys or Brian falling out of bed but a 6.1 magnitude earthquake centered close by in neighbouring Laos.  Brings a whole new meaning to “did the earth move for you ? ”

On the second day of the competition, the resort was very busy with another big group of Japanese golfers and other smaller groups teeing off around the same time.   We expected to play courses A & B again but instead played A & C.   C proved even more challenging than B (average gross scores were 2 higher on this second day); the only factor reducing the number of jugs incurred was that the drop zone on a number of C holes was beyond the ladies tee !

  Results

Enzo launched a serious challenge on Day 2, emerging the Champion with 202 for 70 points.  Robert slipped back slightly, finishing 2nd with 185 for 67 with Hans finishing 3rd with 206 for 66. The Day 2 winner was Geoff with 79 for 36.   (It should be mentioned that had Ricardo not been cut 7 each day for winning the monthly trophy, he would have been a clear winner).

Robert fully justified his win !

Later that evening 13 players plus Richard Moss had a very pleasant dinner with wine & beer at the Riverside Restaurant.

4th Day – Team Scramble – Summit Green Valley

Another beautiful and challenging golf course.  The weather was again hot and sunny.

Five 4 player teams cunningly selected by El Pres teed-off ~ 30 minutes late as we initially had to wait for some buggies, then had to wait for 3 flights of Koreans to cross over before we could start.   Later we were joined by John Laidley for lunch.

Results

The Dream Team of Geoff, Hans, Colm & Dave emerged winners in a closely fought contest for the 1st 3 positions, with 5 birdies and 3 bogies for 70.  Particular highlights included 2 long putts to give 2 birdies in the first 3 holes, Colm getting a near hole-in-one on #6 and Geoff playing a magnificent 2nd shot from a poor lie on #9.

Second on count back over the final 3 holes was the team of Iain, Tom, Ron & Peter K with 71, with 3rd, the team of Berni, Wayne, Frank & Enzo.   4th were Robert, Peter H, Edwin & Allan with 75 & 5th, Ricardo, Lars, Pietro & Brian with 76.

  COTD

There were 5 nominations for this:

  1. Iain – for foolishly confiding in Tom in confidence
  2. Peter H – for coining the DIB expression, for noting that he expected to be COTD, for being a member & for walking the course rather than riding with his caddie
  3. Brian – for not bringing Wayne Beck
  4. Frank – for going home with Colm & not fining himself throughout the tour
  5. Tom – for having an orange bag to match his shower cap

And the winner was Peter H   !

COTT

However finally, it was time for that most prestigious of awards, COTT.   There was little disagreement amongst the players when it came to this award.

Tom Holmes – you are the 2019 May COTT !

The various prize winners received sleeves of balls courtesy of Renaissance Hotels (thanks to Robert Frager).

Fines & Honesty Jugs

There were numerous jugs on the 1st & 2nd days in particular, and the Fines Master (Frank) was in fine form, penalising numerous people for various misdemeanors.  As a result, we topped up the WHIP by ~18,000 baht over 3 days.

May Away 2019 – Thailand

The KLOGS Away Tour to Thailand went off very smoothly for all from 13-18th May 2019, thanks to thorough planning by El Pres, Iain Wise.  We played three good courses, Laem Chabang International Country Club (Day 1), Khao Kheow Country Club (Days 2 & 3) and Treasure Hill Golf Club (Day 4).  The weather was overcast & cool the first three days with brief heavy rain on day 3 during the round; day 4 was sunny and hot throughout.

The KL contingent was joined by participants from UK, Australia and Thailand; we had 18 players including 1 visitor (Peter Hayes).

1st Day – Monthly KLOGS Medal – Laem Chabang International Country Club (B&C)

20190514_130050_resized.jpg

2nd Day – 1st Day of Competition – Khao Kheow Country Club (A & C)

3rd Day – 2nd Day of Competition – Khao Kheow Country Club (A & C)

A challenging day on the golf course !

Results

Given the change from white to gold tees, as expected, scoring was generally lower on this second day (by an average of ~3 shots).   Stan was one of the few leaders to improve on the 2nd day (by 4 shots), winning day 2 with 88 for 41 giving 180 for 78 overall and moving himself up to a tie for 1st with Iain (194 for 78).  Stan was the winner on count back.  Third was Ricardo Castro (167 for 77)

4th Day – Team Scramble – Treasure Hill Golf Club

Three 4-player teams & two 3 -player teams cunningly selected by El Pres teed-off with all teams playing off scratch.

 Results

It seemed this course slightly favoured the 3-player teams, with the team of Ted, Ron & Allan  narrowly beating Peter, Colm & El Pres on countback, both with 75 (+3).

Third were the Pervo’s (Stan, Wayne, Brian & Rikki) with 77 (+5), fourth, the team of Bernie, Dave E, David H, & Peter K with 79 (+7) then fifth,  Ricardo, Roger, Frank & Rick with 82 (+10).

November Away – Bangkok Thailand

group

Our second away of the year was a trip to Bangkok 19th to 24th November the city had not been visited in over 10 years. Seven players joined the official tour flight, Jimmy only discovering that he was on the ½ half later flight when he was at the airport. Only a minor mistake – others in the past having booked for the wrong, day/month and even one of our guys landing in Chiang Rai instead of Chiang Mai. The tour hotel of Taipan was conveniently located close to Sukhumvit and the main commercial district. Twenty One tourists plus resident fitness coach Richard Moss met at the Corner Bar shortly after 6pm on the Monday evening to renew acquaintances. The tentacles of KLOGS seem to reach further and further and it was good to have 2 new guests both based in Hua Hin – Lars Faerch from Denmark and an Irishman John Callaghan. Other frequent away specialist were also in force David, Frank, Gary, Richard, Colm and Ron. An early night enjoyed by all ready for the next day’s golf.

1st Day – Monthly KLOGS Medal – Summit Windmill Golf and Country Club

After an eventful bus journey, much of it in reverse and repeated U-turns we eventually arrived at our venue Summit Windmill Golf and Country Club for the November Game still in good time. Under clear skies we teed off on what proved to be a challenging course. The course was in good condition but had water on nearly every hole.

Results

After finally being embarrassed to stump up his membership fees earlier on the bus with the inducement of an extra shot Tony Morris was the day’s winner with a score of 95 for 34 points cut 4, he was astounded at this as this severely curtailed his chances of his main objective the money game. Second was Geoff McLaws 81 also for 34 points cut 2 and 3rd Tom Holmes 93 for 32 points cut 1.

NTP winner hole 2 : Ricardo
NTP winner hole 4 : Tom
NTP winner hole 12 : Frank
NTP winner hole 17 : No one – All fined 100 baht
Lowest gross : Gary 89 (Geoff already taking second place)
Last birdie : can’t remember

COTD

There were 3 nominations for this initial award :

  1. Geoff McLaws for bringing his Baileys from home but forgetting to take it out of his carry on and place it into his hold luggage. He then had the option of leaving it in a locker in KLIA2 but this works out more expensive than the cost of the Baileys so has to place it in the liquid bin at airport security and then buy another one 50 yards later from duty free.
  2. Tony renews his membership on the bus with a promise of 1 more stroke and promptly wins the trophy game resulting in a cut of 4 for the money games.
  3. El Pres for organising a bus driver who went down several back alleys that were way too small for a coach to fit and for failing to issue every flight with their tape measures for the NTP.

The winner was EL PRES an easy decision.

On the bus back to Bangkok the fines master Martin did his rendition and boosted the Klogs WHIP, followed by the draw for the Horse and Jockey.

2nd Day – 1st Day of 2Day Competition Subhapruek Golf Club translated as Superpr*ck

The bus journey on day 2 was far less adventurous, The guide and driver having mastered the simple left, left and left again to get out of soi 23 and on to the main road. After team photo attended by nearly all we teed off ahead of time and we all finished by before 3-30pm.

Results

The scoring on day 2 was much improved with Roger McGowan shooting an excellent 94 for 42 points closely followed by Pietro on 40 points, Richard Green 39 and Tom on 38 points. Bernie was in last place. 39).   Full results below :-

NTP winner 1st Nine hole 2 : No One
NTP winner 2nd Nine hole 14 : Stan – 2m
For winning day 1 Roger got a hat and shirt from the Pro Shop

COTD Nominations for this award :

  1. Stan for completely failing to understand HCPs even though Tom explained it to him 3 times. On hole 16 he was claiming a 5 for 2 points. ‘No’ says Tom ‘It’s a 5 for 1, you have a HCP of 15’ ‘Yes’ says Stan ‘I get strokes on holes 16, 17 and 18’
  2. Roger for panicking when the bus leaves the golf course and tries to get the coach driver to turn round and collect his clubs even though they were already on the bus and Roger for taking 5 minutes and 6 attempts to finish the winner’s jug.
  3. Geoff McLaws for complaining about the continuous whips being collected. This was after he had to borrow money from Jimmy to pay for his caddy and then had to buy a shirt from the club shop as he had forgotten to bring a clean one to change into.

The winner was Geoff.

3rd Day – 2nd Day of 2 Day Competition Subhapruek Golf and Country Club

For the second day of the competition EL Pres decided the field would play off the longer gold tees.

Results

The change in tee box resulted in only 4 players scoring better than on the previous day. The majority found the longer course and maybe that this was now day 3 a handicap. One player however came from last on day 1 to first on day 2 and scored an impressive 41 points – as Stan would say it appens. This was however not sufficient to overtake Roger who managed to hang on to 1st place with a second – round score of 32 points for an overall score of 74points. Runner up was Ricardo with a two-day total of 66.

Day 2 – Winner Berni Schobert 41 points – sleeve of balls
NTP winner 1st Nine hole 6 : Can’t remember 2nd Nine hole 16: Richard 2.7m

The winners of the Horse & Jockey competition were Roger ridden by Enzo for 1st (6,300 baht each)and Gary ridden by Pietro for 16th (4,100 baht each) (Tony Morris’s manipulation placed him in 17th place).

COTD

There were 5 nominations for this:

  1. Tony for trying so hard to finish 16th and collect the money only to score 1 point to many and finish 17th
  2. El Pres for changing to gold tees and seeing only 4 people improve their score
  3. John for being so well prepared for on course drinking that he brings his own glass
  4. Gary for stealing somebody else’s KLOGS shirt
  5. The easy winner was Gary for stealing Lars wallet in a bar. He finds it in his pocket 30 minutes later in a relaxation centre but cannot be bothered to leave the establishment and find Lars so continues with his relaxation. The police were involved and he gave his wife’s number instead of his own in relation to the incident.

Later that evening all 18 players and fitness coach Richard attended Cabbages and Condoms a famous Bangkok Thai Restaurant owned by the former Health Minister of Thailand widely acclaimed for promotion of contraception into the country and responsible for the birth rate averaging at around 2 children. Thailands population has remained static for the last 30 years.

A good set menu washed down with ample quantities of beer were enjoyed by all

4th Day – Team Scramble Panya Indra A & C

The course proved to be rather busy, possibly due to the night before being Loy Krathong a Thai festival where hand-made Krathongs, made from banana tree trunk and banana leaves, held together with pins, and decorated with flowers and lanterns are floated on water.

The 21 players were split into 4 teams of four and a jumbo team of five players. Progress was annoyingly slow with waiting on every hole. The round was finished in just short of 6 hours. Expectedly most players were a little worse for wear including some of the caddies who managed to drink more beer than their players.

Results

All 5 teams were separated by only 4 shots vindicating EL PRES’s team selections!!!, The top 3 teams all shot 70 – 2 under par. After complicated count-back the winners were the the jumbo team of 5 players Geoff, Stan, Enzo, Roger and Jimmy.

Second was the team of Gary,Tom, Richard and Allan. -2,100 Baht each

IMG_8360
Winning team receiving their dosh 3,150 Baht each

COTD

There were 4 nominations for this:

  1. El Pres for picking a big hitter in every flight but his own and for picking the scramble flights and coming last
  2. Ricardo for discovering on the last day that his clubs had been damaged on the flight over resulting in his 4 and 6 irons being bent out of shape and playing with them for 4 days without noticing.
  3. Frank for being a peeping Tom
  4. The winner, taking away a sure fire win for El Pres just before the voting was Tom for berating El Pres for hitting onto the green on a par 3. ‘What is the maniac doing?’ exclaims Tom ‘Can’t he see we are putting?’ He then gets assurance from his caddy that this hole is definitely not a ‘call on’ hole. ‘No No’ says his caddy ‘ No call on here’ There was an enormous sign behind the tee box stating ‘CALL ON HOLE’ that Tom somehow didn’t see

COTT

The COTT voting was a brief affair with Gary Cooney, quite rightly, taking the honours for his thieving of Lars wallet and then not doing anything about it and continuing with his evening as if nothing had happened.

He is now known as ‘Fingers Coney’

The various prize winners received sleeves of balls courtesy of Renaissance Hotels (thanks to Robert Frager) and Liberty Travel.

Fines & Honesty Jugs

There were numerous jugs on this tour, along with those dealt out by the Fines Master (Martin) who was in fine form, penalising numerous people for various misdemeanors.

Thanks

To Ricardo for taking care of the Money, for Tom assisting with the Scribe role, Martin for acting as Fines Master and to El Pres for his organization of the tour. Lastly to the overseas participants for joining the tour.

Condolences

The whole group sends their condolences to our Scribe Dave who had to scratch at the 11th hour following the passing of his mother. As a sign of respect a minute’s silence was held on the bus on day 1.

May Away 2018 – Vung Tau, Vietnam

Good Morning, Vietnaaaaaam !

The first KLOGS Away Tour to Vietnam went off very smoothly for all from 15th-20st May 2018, thanks to the thorough planning by El Pres, Iain Wise. Our base was the seaside / oil town of Vung Tau, approximately 2-2.5 hours south east of Ho Chi Minh City. We played one stunning course, The Bluffs Ho Tram and one satisfactory course (Paradise). Tour accommodation was at the Muong Thanh Hotel, Thong Nat, ~200m from the seafront; the hotel was fine for our needs except for the bacon at breakfast. Weather was hot and sunny throughout.

Most golfers arrived late afternoon on Tuesday after the coach transfer from Tan Son Nhat International Airport; we rode into town with the sound of Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” blaring from the bus (well, we didn’t, but we should have). Most were then fit and ready for the first round on Wednesday morning (or not, as the case may be). The KL contingent was joined by participants from UK, Australia and Thailand. We had 18 players including 1 visitor (Wayne Malouin), supported by fitness coach, Richard Moss and wandering minstrel, Ian Durant, who both flew in specially for the event.

1st Day – Monthly KLOGS Medal – Vung Tau Paradise Resort

This course was situated close to the hotel so there was very little time for the usual pre & post-game Baileys. We played the A & C courses on this first day. The courses and scenery were good but challenging with out-of-bounds on many holes and thick trees narrowing many fairways; the course also featured a couple of bunkers in the middle of one fairway that Saddam Hussein would have been proud of, 15ft deep with steps going into them; these were almost invisible as you approached but proved very difficult to get out of. The greens also had a lot of grooves so putting was always tricky.

Results

Only one player, our guest Wayne M, beat his handicap with 91 for 37 points, but since guests are not eligible for the trophy, the May medal winner with a score of 100 for 36 points was your scribe, Dave Evans (cut 4). (NB : MACC confirmed that no money or handbags changed hands between moneybags and the scribe to secure this result). Ted Parslow was second with 89 for 35 and Peter (Kenny Ong) Kenyon was third with 102 for 34 (cut 2 & 1 respectively).

  • NTP winner 2nd Nine : None
  • Lowest gross : Wayne M : 91
  • Last birdie : David Hewitt
  • Apocalypse Now moment – Wayne ‘Marlon’ Beck with 5 points (One sleeve awarded)

This course severely challenged many players with only 5 beating 100 and 16 jugs being incurred for failing to pass the ladies tee (usually due to a 1st OB shot).

Special Nomination

Whilst competing in his 3rd London Marathon at the age of 62 (sorry Joe!), Joe Lacy was offered at mile 24 a beer which he declined when he discovered it was cans of Jack Daniels and coke. KLOGS arranged through our international network to bring in supplies of this drink so he could taste what he had missed out on.

COTD

There were 4 nominations for this initial award :

  1. Iain – for hitting his ball from in front of the tee marker then moving the marker forward to correct the error. Then penalizing Brian for teeing off from the moved marker.
  2. Wayne B – for getting a par on the 4th hole on the second nine which quadrupled his score
  3. Allan – for falling asleep and being offered a refund
  4. Brian – for spraying the wrong bus with shaving foam

The winner after a recount was Iain Wise.

2nd Day – 1st Day of Competition – The Bluffs, Ho Tram Strip

This Greg Norman-designed course was truly spectacular being set within towering sand dunes, about 50km north east of Vung Tau; the course was in very good condition and has beautiful views on almost every hole.

On the first day, we played off the white tees; on the second, the blue tees. Many holes challenged our group, notably the Par 3 4th hole, where a shot left or right was likely a lost ball but if you landed on the green but failed to stop the ball then it disappeared down a 50ft + cliff ! A lot of shots were played from the sand over the two days.

Results of the full two-day competition are shown below

bluff2

Setting the golf course on fire this first day with a score of 82 for 43 points was Martin “Ah love the smell of napalm in the morning” Walsh; second was Bernie Schobert with 88 for 41, closely followed by Joe Lacy with 88 for 40 points.

Novelty winners were :

  • NTP winner 1st Nine : Bernie (3.2m)
  • NTP winner 2nd Nine : Iain (3.1m)
  • Lowest gross : Bernie with 81

Martin’s prize as leader on day 1 was a Bluffs golf shirt; he made a crafty attempt to get the matching shorts but failed.

The surprise on this day of the event was the performance of Wayne B, who improved 600% on the day before with 32 points.

COTD

There were 3 nominations for this:

  1. Frank – for his excitement over getting last birdie on the 17th only for Joe to hole out for his birdie immediately after and then discovering there was no award for last birdie; also for holding the bus up in the morning
  2. Iain – for his shorts
  3. Andrew – for not reaching the flag on an 8ft putt even though the flag was dropped in the way by Brian

Again, the winner was Iain ! (A pattern developing here)

3rd Day – 2nd Day of Competition – The Bluffs, Ho Tram Strip

Another great day on the golf course !

Results

Given the change from white to blue tees, as expected, scoring was generally lower on this second day (by an average of 3 shots). Despite a half-hearted attempt the previous evening to nobble Martin, he was able to comfortably increase his lead to finish first with 170 for 80 points. Second, 5 points back was Joe Lacy with 181 for 75. Stan was one of the few to improve on the 2nd day (by 7 shots), winning day 2 with 95 for 39 giving 197 for 71 overall and moving himself up to a tie for 3rd with Bernie (173 for 71).

  • NTP winner 1st Nine : Rikki
  • NTP winner 2nd Nine : Wayne M

The winners of the Horse & Jockey competition were Martin with Allan Wright for 1st and Andrew Robinson with Kenny Ong for 12th. (Andrew, Rikki and Hans were actually tied for 12th, but Hans had the worse day 2 score so dropped out of the running; then it proved very difficult to separate Andrew & Rikki as amazingly they had identical Day 2, back 9, 6 & 3 scores; Andrew was eventually declared the winner based on his single point on the final hole !)

COTD

There were 3 nominations for this:

  1. Iain – for ordering 4 pizzas for 8 (hungry) people, for choosing the blue tees for the second day, for failing to putt onto the green on a 15m putt
  2. David H – for being grumpy, for providing cultural experience (?) & for his caddy getting involved in Wayne’s sand dune land slide incident
  3. Rikki – for reversing his buggy into Brian’s and breaking it

Again, the winner was Iain !

Later that evening the group plus Richard Moss & Ian Durant had a very pleasant dinner with wine & beer at the Ganh Hao seafood restaurant booked by Ian D, who entertained us later with a few Irish songs and his mandolin.

4th Day – Team Scramble – Vung Tau Paradise Resort

Three 4 player teams & two 3 player teams cunningly selected by El Pres teed-off slightly later than booked on the A & B courses with all teams playing off scratch. Again, these courses proved a challenge.

Results

The team of Martin (again !) with Wayne B, Hans & Peter conquered the course, with 71 (-1).

20180519_161020_resized_1

Second was the team of Iain, Bernie & Andrew with 74 (+2), then third on countback, the team of Ron, David H, Frank & Brian also with 74 (+2). Ted, Rikki & Allan tied with Dave E, Joe, Stan & Wayne M with 76 (+4).

COTD

There were 5 nominations for this:

  1. Martin – for his buggy driving
  2. Dave H – for moaning
  3. Frank – for sticking his driver in an inappropriate position then breaking it
  4. Andrew – for booking his AA flight without luggage or sports equipment, then discovering he was booked on a later flight than the group
  5. Iain – for confusion over the choice of blue/white tee boxes (in the event, they were frequently together)

And the winner was Iain !

COTT
Given the earlier pattern, there was no surprise with the result :
Iain Wise – you are the 2018 May COTT !

David H was awarded a compensating ‘Grumpy C***’ mug

The various prize winners received sleeves of balls courtesy of Renaissance Hotels (thanks to Robert Frager).

Fines & Honesty Jugs

There were numerous jugs (30+) over the 3 days, and the Fines Master (Martin) was in fine form, penalising everybody for various misdemeanors. As a result, there was no reason to call upon extra for the Whip.

November Away 2017 Hua Hin, Thailand

20171116_114538_resized

The KLOGS made our second trip to Thailand this year, this time the venue being the picturesque seaside resort town of Hua Hin which we visited from 14-19th November. We had an interesting drive down to Hua Hin as two of the seven-man KL contingent (Berni & your scribe) were left behind by the coach after a brief stop for provisions en-route so had to be recovered by a motor cycle rescue team ! However, all 7 did eventually arrive in Hua Hin, where we were joined by the local participants from Thailand and the Australian tourists. We were supported by fitness coach, Richard Moss, who flew in specially for the event.

Tour accommodation was at the Wannara Hotel which was fine for our needs and handy for the beach and local cultural attractions.

For the first three rounds, we had 13 players including 1 visitor (Ron) as Richard Greene could only play on Day 1 & Day 4 and with Gary Cooney joining on Day 2.

1st Day – Monthly KLOGS Medal – Springfield Royal Country Club

20171115_135938_resized

Day 1 dawned sunny with light cloud. The course was in good condition and the scenery very attractive.

Results

Making something of a habit of winning the first day was El Pres (Iain Wise) with a score of 91 for 39 points (cut 4), followed by Pietro Martucci with 96 for 38 points (cut 2) & Martin Walsh with 87 for 37 points(cut 1).

Full results below :

  • NTP winner #4 : Rikki Ingham
  • NTP winner #6 : Richrd Greene
  • NTP winner #14 : None
  • NTP winner #17 : David Hewitt
  • Lowest gross : Berni Schobert (84)
  • Last birdie : not won as those with birdies had other prizes

Colm O’ Donovan was also belatedly presented with his winners tankard from the Chiang Mai tour, the wrong tankard having been brought to that event !

COTD

There were only 2 nominations for this initial award :

  1. El Pres (Iain) – for leaving 2 people behind on the trip from Bangkok to Hua Hin, and for reading out the flights for Day 2 as Day 1
  2. Allan – for leaving his smokes in a bar then begging for some before the bus

An easy decision this, and also continuing his first day trend from Chiang Mai, the clear winner was Iain Wise.

2nd Day – 1st Day of Competition – Black Mountain Golf Club

20171116_120918_resized

After a major storm during the night, the omens were not good for a dry day on the golf course, but despite thunder being audible throughout the day, the rain held off with only a brief 5 minute shower.

Following the group photo, we had a late start at ~ noon, tee-ing off from the 61 tees.

This course has beautiful views on almost every hole and was in good condition despite the overnight rain.

Results

The results were closely spaced on this first day of the competition, with the leader(s) on 40 and the tail end of the field with 31. The winner on countback was Martin Walsh with 83 for 40 points, followed by Gary Cooney (80/40) then Berni Schobert (83/39) & Ron McLung (89/39). These four would make up the final flight for Day 2.

Full results below

  • NTP winner 1st Nine : Jimmy Leggett
  • NTP winner 2nd Nine : Gary Cooney

Martin’s prize was a pair of shorts from the pro-shop, though he opted for a more sober colour than El Pres when he won in Chiang Mai (see group photo)

COTD

There were again only 2 nominations for this award :

  1. Iain Wise – for various (undocumented) indiscretions
  2. Martin Walsh – for turning up late at the pub the previous night with his shirt on inside out, claiming he had only been asleep

And the winner (again) was Iain Wise

3rd Day – 2nd Day of Competition – Black Mountain Golf Club

20171117_125604_resized

The second day of the competition was a sunnier and much hotter day at Black Mountain and many people (your scribe included) were beginning to flag, particularly since we also tee’d off from the tougher 65 tees.

Results

Given these earlier factors, scores were not as high and there was a much bigger spread in the field (37-17).  Most of the leading contenders maintained their form on the second day with Martin Walsh holding onto his lead and finishing 1st with 169/77 but with Pietro (dark horse) Martucci making a challenge and moving from 5th to 2nd place with 189/75. Gary Cooney was 3rd with 166/74 and had the lowest cumulative gross.

  • NTP winner 2nd Nine : Colm O‘ Donovan

The winners of the Horse & Jockey competition were Martin with Pietro for 1st and Colm with Ron for 10th. (A couple of players, including your scribe, mounted a challenge for 10th place instead, but ultimately dived too low !).

20171117_160344(0)_resized

COTD

There were 4 nominations for this:

  1. Berni – for helicoptering his golf club into the water, to follow his golf ball
  2. Gary – for wearing a jockey shirt
  3. Frank – for getting stuck in a morning traffic jam so arriving late for the coach, and for falsely accusing Gary of not bringing Baileys .
  4. Rikki – for 5 points in 1st 9 holes

And the winner was Frank McKenzie !

20171117_161412_resized

Later that evening all players except Jimmy (who was asleep apparently) plus Richard Moss had a very pleasant dinner with wine & beer at Carlo’s restaurant near the hotel.

4th Day – Team Scramble – Seapine Golf Course

20171118_134646_resized

Another attractive and challenging golf course with a number of holes bordering the Gulf of Thailand. The weather was hot and sunny; fortunately the cooling sea breeze helped on some of the holes.

For this event we were joined by two further guests from Hua Hin (Richard & Trevor) to make up four 4-player teams.

Results

The team of Gary, Frank, Richard (G) & Dave E mastered the course, with 2 early birdies and no bogies; holing 3 long pressure putts later in the round to maintain the bogie-free round to give a score of -2.

Second was the team of Allan, Colm, Richard Greene & Trevor at +1, then Iain, Bernie, David & Jimmy in 3rd and Martin, Ron, Rikki & Pietro 4th .

COTD

There were 4 nominations for this:

  1. Pietro (Luigi) – for playing patience on his phone during the speeches and for repeatedly calling Allan, Dave
  2. Jimmy – for sleeping through the team dinner
  3. Trevor – for being nicknamed TC
  4. Frank – for being given deodorant by Jimmy then leaving Jimmy’s flight

And the winner was Pietro !

COTT

However finally, it was time for that most prestigious of awards, COTT

It has to be noted that the COTD nominations on this tour were fairly tame by recent standards (old age setting in ?)

So with 2 COTD wins during the week, Iain Wise was elected 2017 November COTT !

The various prize winners received sleeves of balls courtesy of Renaissance Hotels (thanks to Robert Frager) and Liberty Travel.

Fines & Honesty Jugs

There were not many jugs on this tour, but the Fines Master (Martin) was in fine form, penalising numerous people for various misdemeanors. As a result, we topped up the WHIP by ~ 7000 baht.

Thanks

Thanks to El Pres for his organization of the tour, to the overseas participants for making the long trip from Australia, to Richard Greene for his hospitality food in his bar on the second night and to our local guides, Frank, Gary & Richard who kept us well advised on the local scene (and the coach on the right road to the course !)

Commiserations

Unfortunately Ricardo Castro (Moneybags) was again unable to join the tour.

Sponsors

Our sponsors are a main reason that we can play at good golf courses and award members with trophies, attractive prizes as well as “KLOGS” signature golf balls. In order to show our appreciation we encourage members to support our sponsors.

And the last word on the tour goes to Martin on the phone to his (obviously Irish) taxi driver before heading off to Departures “Oi said Arrivals cos’ I’m arriving !”

May Away 2017 Chiang Mai, Thailand

20170518_095851resiz.jpg

The KLOGS Away Tour from 16th-21st May 2014 went off very smoothly for all, thanks to the thorough planning by El Pres Iain Wise. All participants arrived early on the Tuesday so were fit and ready for the first round on Wednesday morning (or not, as the case may be). The KL contingent was joined by participants from UK, Australia, Thailand and Cambodia. For the first round, we had 17 players including 1 visitor (Ron) after which Dan Brod departed for Pattaya for a rounders tournament leaving 16 players for the remainder of the tour, supported by fitness coach, Richard Moss, who flew in specially for the event.

Tour accommodation was at the Duangtawan Hotel on Loi Kroh Rd; the hotel has seen better days (I particularly liked the portable safe in my room) but it was fine for our needs and the breakfast was good. It was also handy for the cultural attractions favoured by the group.   Wat Chedi Luang was particularly impressive.

Our tour guide, Winya (Winnie) kept us on track throughout the trip, coping well with the ribaldry on the bus (fueled initially by only 14.75L of Baileys – more anon).

1st Day – Monthly KLOGS Medal – Alpine Golf Resort

20170517_111809Resiz

It was raining when we woke up then rained all day with barely a break until we retired for the night. Luckily tee-off time had been pushed back to 11.34am so there was no rush to leave the hotel and get out on the course. And fortunately, when we did tee-off, the rain was not too heavy, more of a persistent drizzle for most of the time, so did not interfere so much with play. The course and scenery were beautiful even when seen from below an umbrella but nevertheless under the conditions, it was very challenging.

Results

With no-one playing to handicap, the May medal winner with a score of 33 points was Colm O’Donnovan (cut 4). Tied at 31 points so settled on count-back were Tom Holmes (cut 2) & Ted Parslow (cut 1). Wayne & Rick battled it out gallantly for the final placing with Wayne prevailing with 5 points (having lost 26 balls); Rick could take consolation that at 127 he comfortably had the most gross.

  • NTP winner 2nd Nine : Iain Wise

  • Last birdie : None !

COTD

There were 4 nominations for this initial award :

  1. Stuart – for shaving holes all day
  2. Wayne – for his 5 points & use of 26 balls having said he would play well, with a new putter and having had an early night, and with the stated objective of not getting COTD (though wearing the official Tour C shirt in anticipation)
  3. Rick – for ladies tee after 3 shots
  4. Iain – for bringing the December trophy (self nomination) & for a jug on the 1st tee

The clear winner was Iain Wise.

2nd Day – 1st Day of Competition – Chiang Mai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort

Day 2 dawned sunny but slightly overcast, but a welcome relief from the rain on the previous day.   Following the group photo, for which Mike (“this is probably my last tour”) Smith had slipped into some very stylish equestrian-themed shorts, in the (mistaken ) hope they would help him in the horse & jockey competition), we teed-off ~ 9.45am.

This course has beautiful views on almost every hole and was in good condition despite the rain the previous day.

Iain’s prize as leader on day 1 was a pair of colourful running shorts; unfortunately he found out during the following day that it was the colour that ran, not the golfer.

20170519_100629resiz.jpg20170518_155652resiz.jpg

COTD

There were 7 nominations for this:

  1. Ron – for contaminating his Baileys
  2. Colm – for his efforts in measuring the NTP
  3. Iain – for nearly doubling his points of the previous day
  4. Brian – for completely missing the ball on the tee, for using a putter off the tee & for searching for someone who could make use of a 1 cup bra; for hitting Waynes ball of the tee & not passing the ladies tee
  5. David H – because Brian went further off the tee with his putter
  6. Dave E – for ordering extra flies with the meal (the staff having suggested we would be better in the air conditioned room)
  7. Stuart –for jugging out on 1st tee

Not surprisingly, the clear winner was Brian !

3rd Day – 2nd Day of Competition – Chiang Mai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort

Heavy overnight rain resulted in flooding in Chiang Mai making the journey through Chiang Mai to the highway very slow. However, there was no rain during the day and the weather was similar to the previous day (ie sunny & overcast).

20170519_090026resiz.jpg

Another great day on the golf course. 16 players teed-off in reverse order based on their positions the previous day.

Despite serious attempts to knobble him the previous night by Martin and Wayne in particular (Wayne demonstrating numerous different ways of ingesting tequila, none of which I am tempted to follow), Iain just hung on to his lead to emerge the Champion with 192 for 78 points. Martin staged a significant challenge but ultimately finished 1 shot back on 169 for 77.

The surprises on this day of the event were the performances of Brian & Wayne, both of whom improved significantly on the previous day. Brian scored 91 for 45 points, leapfrogging himself up to 3rd in the process

The winners of the Horse & Jockey competition were Iain with Colm for 1st and Ted Parslow with Jimmy for 12th (Dave E losing out on this one on a 3 way countback). Jimmy nearly had his card disallowed since he had put as his name Jimmy 3 putts but he did not take more than 2 all round.

COTD

There were 6 nominations for this:

  1. Iain – for only half filling his winners tankard & for taking 40 mins to drink one tequila the previous night
  2. Martin – for sneaking off early the previous night leaving Wayne to continue the knobbling & for eventually providing 2 x 75cl of Baileys, after much protesting
  3. Wayne – for planning to be COTD
  4. Colm & Mike – for not paying their caddies
  5. Tom – for redecorating

Iain fully justified his second win !

Later that evening 9 players plus Richard Moss had a very pleasant dinner with wine & beer at the Riverside Restaurant, El Pres narrowly avoiding another nomination for needing a calculator to divide the bill by 10.

4th Day – Team Scramble – Summit Green Valley

Another beautiful and challenging golf course. The weather was hot and sunny, a complete contrast to the early part of the week.

Four 4 player teams cunningly selected by El Pres teed-off.

Results

The Dream Team of Tom, Colm, Stuart & Dave E blitzed the course, with 7 birdies and only 1 bogie (on the Index 1) for 66. Particular highlights including 2 long putts to give 2 birdies in the first 3 holes, then Tom playing 2 pressure shots to within a few feet of the hole to set up birdies later in the first 9, a second shot hitting the flag on #15 (par 4), setting up another birdie, then the coup-de-gras – Tom & Colm driving the lake with their 2nd shots on the par 5 18th hole, giving long eagle putt opportunities, eventually yielding the final birdie.

20170520_161127resiz.jpg

Second was the team of Iain, Martin, Ron & Rick with 70, then the other 2 teams at 71 (Bernie, Wayne, Allan & Jimmy and Ted, David H, Mike, & Brian) but they’re not writing this report so that’s enough about them.

COTD

There were 5 nominations for this:

  1. Tom – for despicable behavior (generally)
  2. Brian – for wayward driving through the round then hitting a 220m drive on the last hole, and for being given a ‘yellow card’ by Hastie for mind games within his own team
  3. David H (Hastie) – for his enthusiasm for acquiring local knowledge from our dedicated (and patient) tour guide
  4. Martin – for his rampant imagination relating to the hole 9 layout
  5. Wayne – for no alcohol the preceding night.

And the winner was David H !

COTT

However finally, it was time for that most prestigious of awards, COTT

There was little disagreement amongst the players when it came to this award, particularly given his strenuous efforts to dig himself deeper and deeper into the hole by arguing that his 75cl bottle of Baileys met the requirement.

Martin Walsh – you are the 2017 May COTT !

In addition to the trophies mentioned above, various prize winners received sleeves of balls courtesy of Renaissance Hotels (thanks to Robert Frager).

Fines & Honesty Jugs

There were numerous jugs on the 1st & 2nd days in particular, and the Fines Master (Martin) was in fine form, penalising numerous people for various misdemeanors. As a result, we topped up the WHIP by 16,000 baht on these 2 days alone.

Commiserations

Unfortunately Ricardo Castro (Moneybags) was unable to join the tour as he was confined to Malaysia while his work permit was being processed

November Away – Siem Reap -15th-20th November 2016

FULL RESULTS, TEAM PHOTO AND OTHER ASSOCIATED PICS. AS ATTACHED BELOW:

A few words in conclusion:
Many thanks to my ‘helpers’ on the away:
  • Dave E for carrying the KLOGS ‘away banner’ and ensuring prominently displayed each day at the venue.
  • Tom and Rikki for checkking scores and especially formulating the optimum perceived scramble teams given 17 players.
  • Moneybags for keeping a tight rein on the ‘Purse Strings’ – consider the ‘whips’ were spot on and total very good value for money, we had a short overall deficit of 48 RM at the end of the day for the whole tour – TQ Iain
  • Simon (Liberty Travel) for ensuring all went smoothly at all venues along with his selection of excellent transportation, driver and guide.
and lastly:
for all attendees for being punctual on the bus at all times and especially those ‘overseas’ KLOGGERS’ who continue to make the journey fro wherever they come from without whom i consider the KLOGS Aways would not be as successful as they are.
NOTABLES:
DAY 1 GOLF – PHOKEETHRA COUNTRY CLUB
What an arrival – caddies lined up with our full names on the backs of their tops (a shame this was not Horse and Jockey Day!!!!!!!!!!!)
VERY GOOD COURSE CONDITION, weather great, F&B very good at the clubhouse
BERNIE winner of the NOVEMBER MONTHLY MEDAL and Tankard- a great 85 gross/39 points
COTD: EL PRES – for various misdemeanours including a complete ‘cock-up’ with the distribution of the free sleeve of balls as donated by Simon of Liberty Travels and for being asleep before 9 p.m. on an away!
DAY 2&3 GOLF – ANGKOR GOLF RESORT (Nick Faldo design)
Again from our arrival to departure – first class service at this venue
EXCELLENT COURSE CONDITION, weather great, F&B at the clubhouse excellent too
DAY 2:
PIETRO (hustler) MARTUCCI clear winner of Day 1 of the 2 day away championship with a magnificent 85 gross for 44 points (this ‘magical’ achievement after shooting 105 for 23 points on the previous day!)
COTD: EL PRES – for watching the ‘BLUES BROTHERS’ Movie on the away in his room at the hotel (now you may begin to wonder if there is a ‘COTD Conspiracy’ afoot here given Pietro’s handicap does not get cut for December!)
DAY 3:
PIETRO (hustler) MARTUCCI takes the  2 day away championship Tankard with another amazing 88 gross for 41 points (Pietro states to me “i only getta the 41 points a this a time”!
Now at this juncture you may consider Pietro must be a clear favourite for COTD………………………….
COTD: EL PRES – for being sober on the away (and as a consequence RIKKI INGHAM looked more sober than anyone could remember ever seeing him on an away whilst getting on the bus the next morning!!!!!)
DAY 4 GOLF – BOOYOUNG GC
Final course for the scramble
not as good in condition as the other courses, very hot weather, F&B adequate (if you like Korean crap!)
WINNERS of Team Scramble: TOM, ROGER & COLM with a magnificent GROSS 67 off a zero H/C
COTT: EL PRES – Automatic selection decreed by all those present with the exception of one participant (Allan Wright)
ALL TAKE CARE, AND FOR BEING THERE
CHEERS
