September 2016 Game at KRTU

img_9940

KRTU (Kelab Rekreasi Tentera Udara) is a golf course tucked away at the military base at the west side of Subang airport. The club is also known as Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Recreation Club and is located within the perimeter of a RMAF Subang Air Base. KRTU was the country’s first all-Malaysian golf project. Malaysians were responsible for not only the planning, design and construction, but also continue to maintain and manage the golf club. To get access you need to deposit your passport at the entrance gate to sign in to the facilities.

The course is cow grass but is well maintained with rather devious and undulating greens. The fairways are fairly tight with many trees and water where you can easily lose your ball or at the very least precent you from attacking the greens.

KRTU present two contrasting nines, with the longer 3,130-metre front side, also called Tasik (Lake), offering longer, wider fairways and more water hazards than the closing side. The 3,094-metre homeward nine is hilly and is aptly named Sawit (Palm) as many of its narrow fairways are fringed with palm trees from tee-to-green.

It is not uncommon to hear golfers remark “If you can play well in KRTU, you can play well anywhere.”

We must say a big thank you to Zak Zainal (member at KRTU) who helped us arrange and book this game at this facility.

Hole 5 : Zak Zainal 5.5m

Hole 11 : Dave Evans 1.2m

Hole 17 : Ford Inglis 2.99m

On a side note Flight No 2, which comprised myself, Ricardo Castro and Paul Geddes managed the whole round without the need to use the tape measure ….. quite an achievement I thought.

COTD

We had 5 nominations this month for COTD.

  1. Dave Evans for not being able to count to 4 …… Quote “If I’m playing with Jarno, Iain and Stan that makes 5!”
  2. Bernard Romahn for playing his 2nd shot on Hole No 3 from the fairway of Hole No 2 which is OB
  3. Allan who was quoted as describing himself as “Built for comfort and pleasure …. not speed”
  4. Mike Smith for hitting a ridiculously lucky topped shot on the 17th hole which eventually ran up and onto the green to a short distance from the hole (he missed the birdie putt!)
  5. Zak for boasting after 9 holes that he had 21 points …. he had 9 points on the back 9!

Zak Zainal was duly voted as COTD.

October 2012 Game at KRTU

Scribe Report

KRTU

17th October 2012

As the acting Scribe, Jimmy being away, I can assure you that this offering will not be as lengthy and effusive.

The 11 players all managed to get through security easily, thanks to some pre planning by Andrew Robinson, and tee off started on time, on a pleasant afternoon.

The course was in excellent condition, although the greens were a little slow after all the rain, but played true. As always at this course, the staff were friendly and helpful and the imported caddies were rated highly by all, except for one exception, Captain Bruce.

Disappointingly, Bruce quit after 3 holes after a “discussion” with his caddy regarding an OB. The caddy had made an error on the second hole, when the ball was not in fact OB. The captain informed his amazed playing partners that he could not concentrate and there was point in him continuing, and off he disappeared. That left Andrew and myself playing a 2 ball, not ideal, as we were waiting on every hole to play.

The committee has to decide if any action is required regarding this very unusual behaviour.

Apart from a couple of holes, when we had light rain, we were very fortunate as the storms went around the course for the rest of the day, and all 3 flights finished in around 4 hours.

A very enjoyable evening was had by all, as the beer flowed free, after a slow start, and the food went down well, with lots of second helpings.

Results.

Mike Smith was the winner, with a 96 for 39 points, cut 4. His second win the last 24 hours, before he leaves for his holiday in India. Second place was John Preston with 90 for 35 points, cut 2, and in third place was Karl Muir, ocb, from Andrew Robinson, with 84 for 34 points. Karl only cut 1 as he tried to protect his tour h/cap.!!

The prizes were shared around, as Karl had last birdie, lowest gross and 3rd place so….KLOGS saved 2 sleeves. Most golf was played was played by Ray, most of which was unfortunately on the greens…!!

COTD Nominations

  • Mike Smith for practicing on the range, after winning on Tuesday
  • Ray Funnell for picking up on the first, thinking he was OB
  • Rick Brown advising his partners to aim for the light box.  There were 4 boxes in sight….
  • Bob Simpson (1) the saga of the par 5 10th…. Hits his drive into the swamp at the bottom of the hill. Second shot off the tee, hits a massive drive,180m from the green. Next shot goes backwards to 2m. Final shot through the back of the green, picks up…..
  • Bob Simpson (2). 12th hole. Did not wait for the ladies in front to get to their buggies, and hit his shot over their heads. A flight of angry ladies resulted.
  • John Preston. Changing his email address, without advising the membership, with the resulting communications chaos.

The vote was taken between Bob and John, with Bob only narrowly winning the esteemed COTD.

November tour in Hua Hin, next on the list, with the announcement of December Xmas game keenly awaited.
