The Day’s Play

Bukit Jalil Golf Club’s urban myth is that a golfer once lost a large bet and beat his opponent to death on the 18th green — Paul Geddes came close to joining this illustrious club after losing his RM1,000 chipping bet.

Fortunately even after the day’s hits and misses, all golfers made it to lunch or simply buggered off home or back to work. The 18 who went for an interesting and different Vietnamese lunch were rewarded with rice, spring rolls, chicken and other fine foods, good wine and copious amounts of cold beer. The banter was as entertaining as always.

Bukit Jalil Golf Club has changed a lot since our scribe last played there about 15 years ago — what used to be “out in the suburbs” is now surrounded by tall buildings and apartment blocks.

The course was in pretty good condition but the bunkers left a lot to be desired — not an issue if you avoided them, but for many playing a bunker shot from tarmac might have been easier. Thank you Ricardo for the photos, which might in some way explain the slow golf.

A special KLOGS welcome to guests Mitch Deighton and Brian Baidoo, both playing their first game — between them they also made a huge impact on the average age of the group on the day.

Thank you to Sigi for the balls, and all are delighted to hear about your successful heart bypass — we look forward to seeing you again soon. Thank you Ricardo for the wine, quaffed with unusual vigour this month. Maybe a new PB coming soon.

The last birdie of the day was a cracker. Hole 18, and after many alcohol-affected drives and approach shots through holes 1–17, GIR and a long swinging putt looked extremely unlikely. From the moment he hit it, it looked good — and wow, it was better than good. Great to see such wonderful golf, well played Paul G.

President Chez took lowest gross also with an 80, matching Hayden’s 80 — but as you can only win once per game, well played Chez.

Nominations for COTD

After some aggressive advertising through the month, the COTD nominations were more than recent months — though there were still more to come. Nominations were pre-game hinted, and it only took until the second shot of the day to gain further abuse. Reflects the old adage that the pen can be mightier than the sword.

A resounding vote went to Paul, for his drop kicks from the tee box — including borrowing the tee box of a future hole to measure the exact distance to an elevated pin, only to skank it about 10m before re-measuring.

Departed Golfer

Steve gave a short eulogy for Dave Lake and his very sudden passing, having just returned to Australia to enjoy his long overdue retirement and to spend time with his grandchildren. The KLOGS members raised a glass to our dearly departed friend of several local golfing groups. RIP Dave.
