August 2020 Game – Kota Permai Golf & Country Club

The third post-MCO game of 2020 was held at the immaculate Kota Permai Golf & Country Club; El Pres had finally returned from exile in the UK but your former scribe was still unable to hand over his old role to our Australian committee member !

20200819_120659
With an early morning start again, 24 players including our honorary octogenarian Mike Smith and 3 guests (Vind Sidhu, Albert, & Lee Hee Hong) teed-off ~8.15am with a 2 tee box start. The flights which started off #1 were held up throughout by slow flights in front but still finished at ~1.30pm, slightly behind the flights which started off #10. The weather was initially cool but became sunny & hot later. The course as usual was in very good condition and relatively dry so balls ran well if you were on the fairway; bunkers were in-play causing a few players, including your scribe, problems.

We then enjoyed a good meal at Pantai Seafood, where we were joined by Barry Cousins; Andrew Robinson made an early start on the beer as his back was still troubling him, forcing him to abandon at #11. Needless to say, numerous bottles of beer were consumed, together with good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize). The day wrapped up for most ~ 3.30pm.

Results

The day was a day of big points scores, with 10 players bettering or equaling their handicaps. The August medal winner, initially by a huge margin was Hans Bohi with an impressive 87; this was originally for 49 points but his handicap was subsequently reviewed and reduced from 28 to 23 (based on +4 of his NHS handicap 18.7), so he ended up with 44 (cut 8) now playing off 15 !; Thomas Stadler was second (cut 2) with 85 for 42 with Tony Morris third(cut 1) on countback with 87 for 41. Andrew Chez won a sleeve of balls for his lowest gross of 80.

Full results below.

KLOGS Aug results v2
• NTP winner #4 : Clive Gordon
• NTP winner #14 : Vind Sidhu
• Longest drive #8 : Albert 262.5m
• Last birdie : Tony #17

COTD

We only had one person nominated this month (twice) for COTD so the decision was clear :
1. Mike Smith– for complaining people were in his peripheral vision because he has 270 deg vision !
2. Mike S (again) – for spending some time trying to get into locker #91, only to realise it was #16

Fines

There were (surprisingly) no jugs this month but Hans was fined 100 Rm for his handicap violation, a few for incorrect scorecards and others for various misdemeanours.

Next Game

This will be at the Glenmarie Valley course, on Thursday 17 September.

July 2020 Game – Templer Park Country Club

The second post-MCO game of 2020 was held at the Templer Park Country Club with the arrangements being made from a very safe distance in Stonehaven in Scotland by El Pres (recently arrived in KL but in quarantine!)

IMG_9158

With most of the committee AWOL, Allan Wright was persuaded to come out of retirement to be the MC on the day, with your former scribe still unable to hand over his old role to our Australian committee member!

With an early morning start again, 22 eager players including 2 guests (Gerhard Burchhard & Jasmi Kamsar) teed-off ~8am with a 2 tee box start. The flights which started off #10 were held up throughout by a slow 4-ball in front but still finished at ~12.30pm, slightly behind the flights which started off #1. The weather was initially sunny but became overcast later, but the threatening rain held off, though the course was still very soggy from torrential overnight rain.

We then enjoyed a decent meal at the club, joined by various groupies (Barry Cousins, Richard Moss & Andrew Robinson,) accompanied by numerous jugs of beer, good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize) and whisky, procured on our behalf by Andrew Robinson getting mates rates at the Annex. The day wrapped up for most ~ 2.30pm.

Results

With many players, including your scribe, struggling, only 4 players bettered their handicaps. The July medal winner, was David Cheung with an impressive 89 for 43; Ricardo Castro was second with 85 for 38 with Stan C third with 92 for 37. (Actually tied with our guest, Jasmi with 97 for 37). Andrew Chez won a consolation prize of a sleeve of balls for his lowest gross of 83.

  • NTP winner #8 : Clive Gordon
  • NTP winner #11 : Pietro Martucci

In Memoriam

Another sad event during the month was the passing of our friend and regular KLOGer Roger McGowan after a long battle with cancer. Whisky toasts were made and Andrew Barber gave a short speech in remembrance. A full obituary is posted at :

Obituary – Roger McGowan

RIP Roger

COTD

We had only 4 (rather tame) nominations this month for COTD.

1. Stan – for a late handicap adjustment, allowing him to steal 3rd place
2. Andrew Barber – for aiming for the bridge on the 4th hole, then landing on it
3. Ricardo – hunting for Martin in the shower !
4. Sigi – for responsibly picking up the longest drive tape measure & results sheet (when we didn’t have a longest drive !)

Sigi was unanimously voted COTD !

There were surprisingly, only a few jugs this month and a few other fines.

June 2020 Game – Palm Garden Golf Club

The first post-MCO game of 2020 was held at the immaculate Palm Garden Golf Club, with this first game moved to the end of June to allow more time to prepare & become familiar with the relevant golf SOPs etc.  El Pres (Paul Geddes) was stuck in the UK because of movement restrictions but remotely still managed to arrange the game while Scribe (Geoff McLaws) similarly was stuck in Australia so Iain Wise & Dave Evans stepped back into their former roles.

20200625_110703

28 players including our Honorary Octogenarian (Mike Smith) plus 4 guests (Mike Williams, O C Tan, Andy Morrow & Harrish Bhonsle), teed-off at the unearthly hour for KLOGS of 7.15am with a 2 tee box start, most playing off the Blue tees since the course was deemed ‘short’.  Two of the golfers (including your scribe) opted to play off the White tees with a 2 stroke penalty applied; when the others realized that in some cases the Blue tees had been moved back to the Black, a few others wished they had taken the penalty (on the 18th tee, for example, the official difference between Black & White is 72m !).   At that time, the course was not busy so all flights made good time, finishing by ~noon. The weather was initially cool, heating up through the morning.

Post-game, 27 slightly sweaty golfers (the changing rooms & showers not being open) enjoyed a 2-course meal in the clubs banquet suite, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer (when you could get one !) & good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize).  The day wrapped up for most ~ 2pm.

Results

Playing of the blues (and a few Blacks) and with the new handicaps in force, there were only 3 players bettering or equaling their handicaps, with no 40+ winner this week.  The June medal winner on count back was Thomas Stadler with 94 for 38, with Bernd Kaiser 2nd with 93 for 38; Allan Wright was 3rd with 98 for 36.   Andrew Chez won a sleeve of balls for his lowest gross of 83 (with 33 points).

KLOGS novelties

In Memoriam

Our golfing fraternity had been shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our friend and regular KLOGer Tom Holmes (on 12 June) & a regular guest, Arthur Rodwell (father of Richard) in February.  Whisky toasts were made and Iain & Mike Smith gave short speeches in remembrance.

RIP Tom & Arthur

KLOGS - Tom Holmes

 COTD

We had the following nominations this month for COTD.

  1. Iain – for knocking over a beer jug with a badly aimed sleeve of balls
  2. Hans – for not knowing he would be fined a jug for 3 off the tee, despite playing with KLOGS for years, and for saying “he was pin high, but in the water !”
  3. Flight #5 – for slow play, the following flight frequently waiting 5 mins on the tee box
  4. Pietro – for a very long email exchange
  5. Mike S – for getting very agitated & demanding the staff bring him beer immediately, when there was a jug in front of him
  6. Paul Geddes (in absentia) – for implying KLOGS members are like alzeimhers

Hans was unanimously voted COTD !

Fines

There were numerous fines (13 !)  this month for jugs, no doubt because of the choice of Blue tees, plus others for various misdemeanours.

Farewell

Edwin Ferner leaves Malaysia soon to go to darkest Africa; he could not join us for this game but leaves us on a high as the last pre-MCO game (February) winner.   We wish him well.

February 2020 Game – Sungai Long Golf & Country Club

It truly was a beautiful sunny day with, thankfully, a cooling breeze and no sight of rain all afternoon. All six flights completed their rounds, albeit some got around a bit slower than others.

k7

We had a good field of 24 players with four guests, Sam Geddes (Son of El Pres), Herman Brand (1st game and guest of Clive), Thomas Stadler (2nd game and guest of Bernd) and On Chin Tan (2nd game).

The ever efficient starter at Sungai Long arranged for us to have a two tee box start – 3 from the 1st and 3 from the 10th. Malaysia Boleh, two flights suddenly appeared on the 1st tee box just before our 1st flight’s 1pm tee time, who we established had a 1.32 tee time. This eventually meant that flights from the 10th tee box were finishing before the first two flights from the 1st.

Course condition: No one can ever complain about Sungai Long as a golf course. It is always presented beautifully and the fairways, tee boxes (apart from the abomination below) and greens were very good. The rough as always, is very tough so it pays to stay on the short stuff.

We played from the white tee markers which, today, made the course very short; some of the white tees were on the ladies tee box. Yours scribe could benefit from some course management in such situations.

Some good scores were returned but only 7 players bettered or equaled their handicap. I know that the rough was a challenge and I think the scores reflected that.

Caddies: Feedback on the caddies at Sungai Long before we get into the results. About half the field had some complaints about the caddying, anything from ‘giving putts’ and ‘moving debris around the ball’ to demanding higher tips or having the audacity to ‘tut tut’ a players shot! Some trainees were deployed I believe, and also a few ring-ins. The rest thought the caddies did an OK job.

Post-Game Dinner and Prize Giving

East of Highway Restoran is one of our regular and most enjoyable haunts away from the clubs, and once again provided a really good spread of well chosen dishes. Lots of beer and wine (graciously provided again by Ricardo) was imbibed along with heaps of banter and laughs. Ted even provided us with a very comical re-enactment of his ‘dummy spit’ on the 17th hole earlier in the day!  Great day and evening all around!

EGM

As previously notified a short EGM was convened.  Following the AGM the committee was asked to review the current handicap system and make recommendations. These recommendations were put to the members and previous committee members.  The vote on the recommendations was held and the said recommendations were passed unanimously unopposed. The constitution shall be amended accordingly and issued to all members.

Results
• The winner today was Edwin Ferner with an excellent round of 89 off a handicap of 23 and a result of 42 points. (Cut , – 4 for winning plus – 1 for being so good, erm, no, because he had more than 40 points! His base handicap is 22 and you cannot be cut more than four below your base, i.e. 18. Thus cut 5.
• Second today on the sheet was Sam Geddes but being a guest, he could not win. Nonetheless, it should be noted he had a score of 97 for 39 points. El Pres was the fortunate recipient of 2nd given Sam’s ineligibility, with a gross of 84 for 38 points. Cut 2.   Many thanks to Ricardo Castro for sponsoring the Wine prize
• Third place went to Bernd Kaiser with another solid round of 96 for 37 points. Cut 1.

Novelty Awards
• Longest Drive – Hole number 5 Par 5 – Sam Geddes 229.2m
• NTP – Hole number 8 Par 3 – Pietro Martucci 3.2m
• NTP – Hole number 14 Par 3 – Andrew Robinson 2.7m (and he made the birdie putt)
Lowest Gross – Geoff McLaws 81. Second Paul Geddes 84. Third Ricardo Castro 86.

COTD Nominations
• Iain Wise  – playing in the group in front. Claimed they had three caddies working for them and Iain was still raking the bunkers himself!
• Geoff  -for throwing a club in the direction of the caddy. Undue Petulance (that’s a new one).
• Ted – who on the 17th, instead of throwing a club, threw himself on the ground (Ted provided a re-enactment of this at dinner). The caddy asked, “is he dead?”
• Herman – who received advice from his caddy after taking three unsuccessful shots out of a bunker – ungentlemanly conduct! And,
• Siggy who nominated himself for barking (woof woof) on Andrew’s backswing. More fool him, Andrew couldn’t hear!

Unanimous winner was Ted Parslow who was obviously enjoying prostrating himself!

k4

Fines:
Enzo ended up paying the fines for his guests, Herman and Tan. Is that called losing the bet?
Much confusion prevailed but I believe the fines are:
Herman, Tan, Clive and Andy for not reaching the ladies tees. Each fined RM50
Thomas for arriving late – RM20 but paid RM50 – very charitable.
Numerous other misdemeanours raised more funds from Clive, Ted, Herman and Tan to the tune of RM20 each.

We also had a number of fines issued for non-submission of score cards. It will not be accepted to have four players scores recorded on one card and that submitted in place of individual cards.  To clear up this issue once and for all. We each receive a card with our name and handicap already on it. We swap the card with someone else in the group. That person records your score and his own where appropriate on that card. No other scores are to be entered on the card of an individual player. (If so, they are to be scrubbed out before handing the card in).  At the completion of the round, you will check your scoring and sign the card you have completed, as marker, and sign your own card when handed back by your marker.
When you hand in your card after your next round it will be checked off the list and fines will be issued accordingly. Better bring your tens and twenty’s.

May Away – unfortunately cancelled because of Covid-19

Sponsors:
We cannot forget our ever faithful sponsors for their continuing support.
Robert for providing his ever reliable balls for the prizes. There must be so many of those KLOGS balls all over the world by now!
Ricardo for the generous contribution of the wine for the prize giving and for ongoing supply of a much enjoyed beverage.

January 2020 Game – Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia

The first game of 2020 was held at Kelab Rahman Putra, a very picturesque but challenging venue. With one late drop-out, 27 players including Honorary KLOGGERS Ian “Crackers” Craighead & Mike Smith & guests teed-off on the Lakes Course at ~1pm.

20200115_173543_resized

The course was in good shape and the weather was good for the whole of the round.

All players then adjourned for a good four course dinner at the clubhouse where they were joined by Andrew Robinson, Barry Cousins & your scribe. Excellent service was provided by Laily & her staff of KPRM; needless to say numerous jugs were consumed, plus some good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prizes ). joined for dinner. Thanks to Tony for his generous 70th Birthday donation of Rm300.

Results
Seven players bettered or equaled their handicaps, but 12 players recorded less than 30 points reflecting the difficulties of this course if you are not a big hitter.

The January medal winner was Stuart Taylor, with an excellent score of 85 for 48 (cut 12 ! – what a great handicapping system !). Second was Robert Frager with 81 for 46 (cut 2), with an Eagle on the Par 4 13th hole; 3rd was Edwin Ferner (93 for 40)(cut 1).

COTD

We had 6 nominations this month for COTD :

1. Edwin (nominated by Tom) – using his diplomatic immunity in trying to park in the members car park
2. Tom – since Edwin did not drive to the club !
3. Bernd – for an “incident” in the locker room relating to his lost key
4. Mike Smith – for wandering around in towel, asking for directions to the showers
5. Bernie– for nearly wiping out a caddy on 1st tee-box, then still parring the hole.
6. Geoff – for hitting 245m then trying to measure from the 200m line rather than the 250m, and then failing to par the hole

Geoff was unanimously voted as COTD

AGM
The AGM was also held after the game, introduced by El Pres, Iain Wise, who thanked Paul Geddes (VP), Roger McGowan (Moneybags), Dave Evans (Scribe) & Frank MacKenzie (Fines Master) for their support. EL PRES thanked Renaissance Hotels though Robert Frager for sponsorship of new golf balls which should see us through 2020.

EL PRES reported :

KLOGS has now completed its 30th year.

We played 7 different local courses during the year – visiting Templer Park, Kota Permai & Sungai Long twice. It was good to celebrate Xmas at the Chalet Suisse Restaurant after the December game; thanks to Hans and Bernie for making this available.

The May Away was to Thailand, for which we had 18 tourists. It was good to catch up with the Overseas groupies, in particular Brian Jeffers, Wayne Beck & Frank MacKenzie who are regular May Away tourists along with “Hasty” Hewitt.

In November, we returned to Chiang Mai with 20 players attending; after 20 years of Klogging, we finally managed to get Robert Frager on tour !.

Throughout the year 62 active members played 248 rounds. In addition, 18 guests played 27 rounds, so in total 89 players played 275 rounds. We welcomed 13 new members.

The number of local players for the 2 Aways increased which is good to see as we were starting to become very dependent on the overseas members

In Memoriam
Sadly at the end of April we lost one of our members – Ray Funnell. Ray had been a KLOGS stalwart for nearly 20 years. He served on the committee as Vice President in 2007 and is sadly missed. We had a moment of reflection for Ray and other absent Kloggers.

Finances
Iain briefly presented the finances; we have a healthy balance. There were no questions / comments.

December 2019 Game – Templer Park Country Club

The final game of 2019 was held at the immaculate Templer Park Country Club.  22 players including our Honorary Octogenarian (Mike Smith) plus 6 guests (John Lee, Jay Schooley, Jasmi. Franz Hierz, David Ross & Jeff Lynch) teed-off slightly before 1pm with a 2 tee box start.   At that time, the course was almost empty so all flights made good time, with the first flight finishing at ~5pm. The weather was initially sunny & hot with a cooling breeze springing up later; then at ~ 5pm, as the first flights were finishing, a short but heavy rain shower started.  However, all flights completed the full 18 holes.

20191212_141146_resized_1

At the invitation of Hans & Berni, twenty of us then made our way to their Chalet Suisse restaurant in Ampang, where we were joined by various groupies (Barry Cousins, Richard Moss, Andrew Robinson, Pietro Martucci & Ian Durant) and enjoyed a splendid 4-course meal, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer, good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize) and whisky provided by El Pres.  The evening wrapped up for most ~ 9.30pm.

Results

With many players struggling, only 4 players bettered or equaled their handicaps.  Since John Lee was a guest so could not qualify for the trophy, the December medal winner, crediting his good performance to jet lag, was Allan Wright with 99 for 37 (cut 4); Ricardo Castro was second on countback with 84 for 36 (cut 2) from Bernd Kaiser 98 for 36 (cut 1).   John Lee won a consolation prize of a sleeve of balls for his lowest gross of 86 (with 41 points) (Ricardo having won another prize).

November Away 2019 – Chiang Mai, Thailand

img_3561.jpeg

The KLOGS Away Tour from 18th-22nd November 2019 went off very smoothly for all, thanks to the thorough planning by El Pres, Iain Wise.  The KL contingent was joined by participants from the UK, Australia and Thailand, supported by fitness coach, Richard Moss.   Peter Hayes & Lars Faerch were welcomed as new members & Edwin Ferner & Robert Frager as tour virgins (Robert after 20 years with KLOGS).

Tour accommodation was at the Duangtawan Hotel on Loi Kroh Rd; the hotel has seen better days and was very busy for the first couple of days, but it was fine for our needs.  It was also handy for the cultural attractions favoured by the group.

1st Day – Monthly KLOGS Medal – Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort

The course, scenery and weather were beautiful; we played Courses B & C, off the white tees.

  Results

The May medal winner with a score of 84 for 43 points was Ricardo Castro (cut 7).   Second and lowest gross was Geoff McLaws with 77 for 40 (cut 2) & third with 94 for 38, Pietro Martucci (cut 1).   Most gross was your scribe, a position he easily maintained for the 3 days !   Despite the generally good scores, there were numerous jugs incurred (see below)

The clear winner was Tom Holmes (I’m still not sure how Frank & Allan lost this !)

3rd Day – 2nd Day of Competition – Alpine Golf Resort

On Thursday morning at 6.55am, many of the group were awakened by an unusual experience – their rooms were swaying.  It wasn’t the Baileys or Brian falling out of bed but a 6.1 magnitude earthquake centered close by in neighbouring Laos.  Brings a whole new meaning to “did the earth move for you ? ”

On the second day of the competition, the resort was very busy with another big group of Japanese golfers and other smaller groups teeing off around the same time.   We expected to play courses A & B again but instead played A & C.   C proved even more challenging than B (average gross scores were 2 higher on this second day); the only factor reducing the number of jugs incurred was that the drop zone on a number of C holes was beyond the ladies tee !

  Results

Enzo launched a serious challenge on Day 2, emerging the Champion with 202 for 70 points.  Robert slipped back slightly, finishing 2nd with 185 for 67 with Hans finishing 3rd with 206 for 66. The Day 2 winner was Geoff with 79 for 36.   (It should be mentioned that had Ricardo not been cut 7 each day for winning the monthly trophy, he would have been a clear winner).

Later that evening 13 players plus Richard Moss had a very pleasant dinner with wine & beer at the Riverside Restaurant.

4th Day – Team Scramble – Summit Green Valley

Another beautiful and challenging golf course.  The weather was again hot and sunny.

Five 4 player teams cunningly selected by El Pres teed-off ~ 30 minutes late as we initially had to wait for some buggies, then had to wait for 3 flights of Koreans to cross over before we could start.   Later we were joined by John Laidley for lunch.

Results

The Dream Team of Geoff, Hans, Colm & Dave emerged winners in a closely fought contest for the 1st 3 positions, with 5 birdies and 3 bogies for 70.  Particular highlights included 2 long putts to give 2 birdies in the first 3 holes, Colm getting a near hole-in-one on #6 and Geoff playing a magnificent 2nd shot from a poor lie on #9.

Second on count back over the final 3 holes was the team of Iain, Tom, Ron & Peter K with 71, with 3rd, the team of Berni, Wayne, Frank & Enzo.   4th were Robert, Peter H, Edwin & Allan with 75 & 5th, Ricardo, Lars, Pietro & Brian with 76.

  COTD

There were 5 nominations for this:

  1. Iain – for foolishly confiding in Tom in confidence
  2. Peter H – for coining the DIB expression, for noting that he expected to be COTD, for being a member & for walking the course rather than riding with his caddie
  3. Brian – for not bringing Wayne Beck
  4. Frank – for going home with Colm & not fining himself throughout the tour
  5. Tom – for having an orange bag to match his shower cap

And the winner was Peter H   !

COTT

However finally, it was time for that most prestigious of awards, COTT.   There was little disagreement amongst the players when it came to this award.

Tom Holmes – you are the 2019 May COTT !

The various prize winners received sleeves of balls courtesy of Renaissance Hotels (thanks to Robert Frager).

Fines & Honesty Jugs

There were numerous jugs on the 1st & 2nd days in particular, and the Fines Master (Frank) was in fine form, penalising numerous people for various misdemeanors.  As a result, we topped up the WHIP by ~18,000 baht over 3 days.

October 2019 Game – Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

Twenty-two Kloggers attended the picturesque Glenmarie Golf & Country Club to play the Valley course; considering the recent incessant rain, the course was in superb condition with the greens running well and true.   Play got off on time with a two-tee box start; despite the rain returning twice and a short interruption for some due to lightning, we all managed to complete our rounds.   A remarkable feat considering the monsoon afternoon weather that has been prevailing over the last 2 weeks.

For those leaving the course early, the traffic was not too bad; for flight 6, it was nearly 7.30pm by the time they arrived at the Pantai Seafood restaurant.   Jimmy was even later having stopped for a burger on the way.  Here we were joined by our Groupies, Barry and Richard. Food was ordered by El Pres and promptly served after the arrival of the latecomers, who were later fined for their tardiness.  Thanks to Nicky for providing the excellent red and white wine.

Results

The monthly medal winner for October was Lim Hong, with an excellent score of 83 for 45 points (cut 9 !).  Runner up for the second-month running was Geoff McLaws with 75 for 44 points (cut 2).   El Pres was 3rd with 93 for 43 points (cut 1).

September 2019 Game – Sungai Long Golf & Country Club

What Haze !!!!

Golf Courses Fog-crop

Twenty Kloggers turned up to play at Sungai Long; the course was in great condition and the game management by Shanti and her course staff was superb. Play got off on time with a two-tee box start under a light shower which promised slight relief from the haze. This soon passed and we battled through the persistent gloom; showers again returned later in the afternoon along with distant rumbles of thunder. Play however was uninterrupted and we were all finished shortly after 5pm.

The traffic was good and the majority of the players adjourned to the reliable Restoran East of Highway for the dinner and prize giving. Here we were joined by our Groupies, Barry and Andrew along with Moneybags who couldn’t make the game. Ted however found getting to East of Highway directionally challenging and arrived some 45 minutes after everyone else; for this he was fined.  Guest of Roland, Mr Tan was welcomed. Unfortunately he failed to pass the ladies tee box on two occasions and was fined 2 jugs; in true Klogs spirit Roland paid a portion of his guests fine. Roland was also fined 20 Rm for playing from the drop zone using a tee.

Results

Off the white tees Sungai Long is short and the scores were good with several players scoring more than 40 points.   The winner was Tony Morris with 83 for 46 points (cut 10) with Geoff McLaws second with 76 for 45 points (cut 2).  3rd was Helmut Dicknoether with 97 for 42 points (cut 1).

August 2019 Game – Kota Permai Golf & Country Club

20190821_162836_resized_1

The August game was held at the beautiful Kota Permai Golf & Country Club which was in great condition.   After a number of dropouts then late entries, 23 players including 1 guest (Thomas Stadler) teed-off on time with a two tee box start.  The 1st flight just had time to (say) drive into the nearest bunker then chip out, or lose a ball off the tee and search for it when the sirens sounded due to lightning in the proximity and we all had to return to the clubhouse.    Although the sky was very dark, in fact, there was no rain at the course and after ~ 30 minutes, play resumed.   Towards the end of the round, it was darkening again and thunder was heard nearby, but the rain held off and all players completed their rounds by ~ 6-6.30pm.

IMG_0007

After the game, we then made our way to the O&S Seafood restaurant, where we were joined by 4 guests (Richard Moss, Barry Cousins,  Andrew Robinson, & George Murray), then enjoyed good food ordered by Barry, accompanied by numerous bottles of beer, plus good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize).   The only complaint about the food was that we could have done with more rice !! The evening wrapped up for most ~ 9pm.

Results

8 players bettered their handicaps; the August medal winner was Ted Parslow, with an excellent score of 86 for 43 (cut 7); Ted was having a good week as he also won the previous-days Loose Cannons game.   Second was Bernd Kaiser with 93 for 42 (cut 2) with your scribe, Dave Evans third on count-back with 95 for 41 (cut 1), from Stuart Taylor (90 for 41).

    6. Flight 2 – including Ted, for slow play (2 holes behind)

It was a close thing with Barry making a strong challenge, but the winner of this prestigious award was Ted.
